Role:
Principal Design Engineer
Are you an experienced Design Engineer with a strong background in Mechanical, Aeronautical or Automotive Engineering?

Do you have a passion for "Big Engineering", aeroplanes and all things aerospace?

Do you have extensive CAD experience, preferably with CATIA V5?

Do you have knowledge of design for manufacture, precision manufacturing, production, machining and inspection techniques?

Do you have experience in stress analysis and Finite Element Analysis?

Then this exciting role is the role for you


You will be working at a world leading aerospace and aerodynamics research establishment which works with such clients as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, BAE Systems, Saab and Bombardier to mention but a few.

Research for Concorde was done at this establishment.


As a Principal Design Engineer, you will be a senior level Design Engineer in the mechanical design of wind tunnel models of customer's concept aircraft.

You will be a technical authority in a highly technical and enthusiastic team working to deliver theproject on time, in budget and within spec.

You will be the "Go - to" person for stress analysis, both static and dynamic, and FEA.

Further to this you will be able to use your ambition, experience and leadership skills to develop and improve the design team'sskills, capabilities and facilities so the department can be considered as world class by the company's customers.

Your main duties and responsibilities as a Principal Design Engineer will be:
Carry out design activities with mínimal direction from the Design Team Leader, working within budget and to project schedule

Be a technical authority on stress analysis and load calculation

Deliver Written reporting on the above

Facilitate the effective communication with key stakeholders and the management of expectations across the business

Be the technical lead for projects as required by the Design Team Lead or Head of D&M

Maintain a close working relationship with the Project Manager and all other key stakeholders within the project


Contribute to helping to develop, improve and maintain the skills and capabilities of the design team such that it can be considered world class by its customer basis.

A 2.1 or above in a relevant Mechanical Engineering discipline

Relevant prior experience in working as the Technical Lead in a project based environment

Knowledge of design for manufacture

Demonstrable problem solving ability in a logical, competent and timely manner

Have a desire to succeed, see those around them success and be driven by continuous improvement

Knowledge of relevant software packages preferably Catia, Isight, Matlab, Abacus, other FEA

Have some commercial awareness and client relationship experience

Ideally experience of 6sigma and Lean manufacturing processes
