Essential to our continued success, is the appointment of a Health and Safety Advisor. The role will be based at our Scunthorpe office, occasional regional and national travel will be required.


Role Summary

  • Ensuring and assisting in the completion of all assessments required by legislation are conducted and reviewed at relevant intervals and records of this are maintained.
  • Recommend control measures and ensure compliance with safety inspections
  • Carry out investigations into all Incidents and Near-Misses and keep records appropriately
  • Highlight areas where training and certifications are required for people and equipment and keep appropriate records of these.


Above all you will contribute to a positive health and safety culture within the business ensuring that our staff, customers and the public are safe on our premises and on farms across the UK.


Qualifications and Capabilities

  • Should have NEBOSH General Certificate or working towards it. NEBOSH Diploma is desirable.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of all aspects of health, safety and risk management.
  • Experience in an SME environment and understanding of the risks relating to operating in agriculture are desirable.
  • A good knowledge of current health and safety legislation, management and standards.
  • Recent proven experience of working in a health and safety role at a similar level and bringing about culture change within an organisation.
  • Experience in training, coaching and mentoring to develop health and safety knowledge and expertise is desirable.
  • Experience of successfully managing or assisting in projects and defining and establishing new systems as well as maintaining and improving existing ones is desirable.
  • Ability to interpret and provide authoritative advice on health and safety and risk management issues.
  • Ability to prioritise work to ensure tasks are completed within time constraints.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility /versatility combined with initiative, drive and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a wide variety of contacts.
  • Ability to work autonomously and flexibly, responding to business needs.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Continue to develop and oversee the current health and safety programme across the organisation with the support of staff.
  • Review and develop all aspects of McArthur Agriculture's health, safety and wellbeing policies and activity and ensure that it is implemented.
  • Keep up to date with changes in current legislation and to bring to the attention of the Director responsible for Health and Safety any relevant new legislation.
  • Attend such courses/seminars run by external sources to enable accurate interpretation of legislation to enable implementation within the organisation.
  • Ensure that rigorous risk assessment and incident management systems are in place and followed across the organisation.
  • Work proactively with managers and other key staff to establish and maintain a programme of continuous improvement in the management of health, safety and wellbeing within their areas of responsibility.
  • To recommend control measures and advise on the standard of PPE issued to employees.
  • Conduct health and safety inspections and prepare reports of all the company's operations.
  • Immediately contact the Director responsible for health and safety if situations are found, that in the opinion of the Safety Advisor, require immediate rectification or the stopping of any operation.
  • To notify the Director responsible for health and safety if the corrective action agreed after any workplace inspection is not implemented by the arranged date.
  • To carry out investigations into all Incidents and Near-Misses and to record the findings on the relevant forms.
  • Advise the Company Secretary of all incidents reportable under RIDDOR.
  • To arrange Health surveillance as instructed.
  • To highlight areas where training/certification is required to meet the standards imposed by Legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, or H.S.E. guidance.
  • To bring new techniques for improving health, safety and welfare to the attention of the Director responsible for health and safety.
  • To set a personal example by wearing appropriate personal protective clothing/equipment and observing all safety requirements/procedures.
