    Job overview

    1. This role will involve the successful candidate leading a divisionally based coding team within the coding department.

    2. As a team leader, the successful candidate will be responsible for supervising a coding team. This will involve; organising workloads, ensuring that all targets are met, acting as a coding expert within the team, assisting senior members of coding staff with clinical coding audit, training and clinical engagement involving their team, mentoring junior team members and coding as required, thus ensuring that the team contributes towards all departmental objectives.

    Main duties of the job

    The post-holder will supervise a team of Senior Clinical Coders / Trainee Coders. They will ensure that all targets are met in line with the departmental objectives. This will involve meeting monthly deadlines for the submission of coded data (SUS / PbR etc.).

    They will be responsible (under the supervision of the Head of Clinical Coding) for their teams abstraction of clinical information from Cerner EPR and the translation of this information into diagnostic (ICD-10) and operative (OPCS-4) procedural codes. They will make sure this is undertaken by applying National / International rules and conventions. They will also ensure this data conforms to the most up-to-date local standards and policies. They must be aware of the need for accurate coding to ensure the trust is accurately paid and represented in terms of mortality figures / other statistics.

    They will act as a technical coding expert for one of the teams, ensuring a high-quality coding service by providing technical coding advice, mentoring junior members of the team and coding themselves as required.

    They will be required to engage with clinical staff from their divisions to ensure that they help focus audit / monthly checks appropriately and deal with any technical coding queries that arise. This will involve helping to present at divisional meetings.

    Within the coding team, they will be responsible for feeding back the results of coding checks and audits.

    Working for our organisation

    The Clinical coding Department is situated over 2 sites, Royal Blackburn Hospital & Burnley General Hospital.

    It is a small Team but we are looking to expand in the near future

    The Team consists of:

    Head of Clinical Coding

    2 Team Leaders (one on each site)

    Senior Coders

    Trainee Coders

    Qualifications

    Essential criteria

    • GCSE Maths and English Grade C/4 or above or equivalent qualification
    • European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
    • Accredited Clinical Coding qualification

    Desirable criteria

    • Clinical Coding Audit Qualification
    • Clinical Coding training Qualification
    • Managerial Qualification

    Experience

    Essential criteria

    • Significant experience at a senior level working in a clinical coding environment
    • NHS Experience, usually around 3 years
    • Experience of working as an accredited clinical coder

    Desirable criteria

    • Experience of clinical coding Audit or training or clinical engagement or management

    Knowledge

    Essential criteria

    • An expert knowledge and understanding of ICD10 and OPCS Classifications and their application in relation to national standards
    • An expert knowledge of Medical terminology and anatomical and physiological terms
    • Experience and advanced knowledge of a Patient Administration System
    • Significant experience and advanced knowledge in the understanding of NHS clinical coding requirements, date definition and guidelines.
    • Experience and expert knowledge of Clinical Coding Audit
    • Expert understanding of commissioning structures and requirements including PbR and HRGS
    • Advanced Microsoft office Skills , including, Excel, Word and Powerpoint
    • Ability to work and communicate with a range of internal and external professionals
    • Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time
    • Ability to plan own workload and use own initiative with limited support
