    CONSULTANT UROLOGIST with a specialist interest in Andrology

    We have an exciting opportunity to join our Andrology Service within the Urology Department at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, based at Leicester General Hospital.

    We are a large Teaching Hospital Urology Unit and tertiary referral centre with 14 Consultants, 6 Specialist Registrars, 3 Specialty Doctors and 14 doctors in training, 12 Clinical Nurse Specialists and 3 Physician Associates based at the Leicester General Hospital.

    We have an established subspecialist team of Surgical Andrologists leading the East Midlands Supra Regional Penile Cancer Network (c.5 Million population), providing emergency advice and support for all andrological emergencies within the East Midlands, and benign genito-urethral reconstruction (Prof D Summerton and Mr J Goddard). We are a high-volume Implantation centre (both penile and AUS) and we work closely with all of our colleagues, especially Mr J Rai (Urethroplasties and Male incontinence). We enjoy close links to the University of Leicester and Medical School and there are many opportunities to become involved in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching.

    We are seeking a dynamic Colleague to join us to continue to provide and further develop our Service. There is an opportunity for an interested Colleague to link into the existing fertility services. The successful candidate will partake in the on-call which is always supported by a middle-grade rota.

    Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the management of outpatient, day surgery and in-patients
  • To lead ward rounds, outpatients and theatre activity
  • Perform surgical andrological procedures
  • Participate in the weekly teleconference Penile Cancer MDT
  • Attend departmental meetings - including Morbidity and Mortality and audit
  • To take part in the consultant on-call rota
  • To contribute to academic output of the department
  • To participate in a management / educational role at an appropriate point
  • To contribute to the strategic planning and service development of the Urology department

    This post is for a Consultant Urologist with an interest in Andrology to join the team as part of our succession planning and investment programme.

    UHL has invested significantly in the Urology Department and it is a leading Tertiary centre providing major urological cancer services to patients from Lincoln, Northampton and Kettering and provides for much larger populations across the East Midlands and the Arden network for Penis, Testis and kidney cancer. Our tertiary cancer network for prostate, bladder and complex kidney surgery is approximately 2.8 million, with wider referral bases for RPLND, IVC thrombectomy, and penile cancer.

    Leicester is also a major centre for complex colorectal resections, many of which require urological involvement.

    As well as our complex cancer services we deliver specialist female and Reconstructive Urology for both simple and complex incontinence and fistula and urethral diverticular referrals We specialize in Andrology including implant services, collaborate with uro-gynaecology to deliver complex surgery for female pelvic floor dysfunction and mesh removal. Our on-site lithotripter is a valuable treatment aid for both elective and emergency stone cases.

    Job responsibilities

  • To provide Consultant Urology services at the University Hospitals of Leicester, with a focus on andrology both benign and malignant.
  • There are a number of experienced surgeons in the department and the new appointee will be well supported
  • To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care, as prescribed in GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor, at all times and ensuring that bad practice is reported, as appropriate.
  • To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
  • To co-operate in ensuring that services deliver national targets and the local agenda and that the contract is achieved within budget.
  • The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice. To achieve this, the post holder will liaise closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies in contributing to the objectives of the department, CMG & Trust.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported either to the Head of Service or Clinical Director or the Medical Director in a timely manner.

  • Full GMC registration
  • MB BS or Equivalent

  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations

  • Fully trained in Urology
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach understands evidence based practice

  • Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.

  • Personal integrity and reliability. Willingness to learn new skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors.
