Main duties of the job
An opportunity has arisen within The Maxillofacial Outpatient Department at University Hospitals Southampton for a Senior Dental Nurse (Band 5 Registered Dental Nurse). We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible qualified Dental Nurse who can demonstrate a dedication to quality care and provide high standards of dental nursing. The applicant must be Qualified and Registered with the GDC and have proven experience in Maxillofacial dental nursing. The post holder will be responsible for day to day management of the Dental Nurses and clinics within Maxillofacial and provide skilled dental nurse support, ensuring high quality patient care. The clinics we provide are held on the main hospital site and include Head & Neck oncology, Skin Cancer diagnosis and treatment, Facial Trauma and Orthognathic Surgery. We are a small team of 6 Consultants, 8 Dental Nurses and 1 Associate Nurse Practitioner along with junior staff. The post holder will act as a source of expertise and knowledge for the Dental Nurse's, patients and the wider multidisciplinary team. As the Senior Dental Nurse, you will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and work to a professional standard. You will support the Dental Nurse Manager to ensure safe staffing levels and "act up" in their absence.

Job descriptionJob responsibilities
The post requires the Senior Dental Nurse to cover duties/days to ensure there is a Nurse in Charge on all Maxillofacial clinics. We are currently looking to cover the role on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday within 30 hours. The department is open from - Monday - Friday, but with a changing healthcare demands there may be an occasional requirement to work evenings and weekends.
The Senior Dental Nurse will support The Dental Nurse Manager with the provision of Oral and Maxillofacial services including the ordering of essential equipment and consumables within the agreed budget.
The Senior Dental Nurse will be required to take part in the annual appraisal of Dental Nurses, identifying any training and development opportunities within the group.
As part of the role, the Senior Dental Nurse will participate with the Dental Nurse Manager in the planning Dental Nurse provision within the department including the recruitment process.
The Senior Dental Nurse is expected to take on an additional role to support key links such as Fire, Health and Safety and Safe-guarding.
The Senior Dental Nurse role is required to maintain the Trust Duty roster to ensure staff are rostered correctly within their contracted hours, including the provision of annual leave.
