Description
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow (Higher ST6+/Senior) in Transplant Surgery at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
These posts are available from Jan 2025 (potentially sooner) for a minimum of one year, but with a preference to appoint for two years.
The Transplant Unit in Cambridge performs over 300 organ transplants a year. It is unique in the UK as the only centre to perform Adult Kidney, Liver, Pancreas and Multiviseral Transplants. It is also one of the National Organ retrieval centres.
Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Fellow (Higher ST6+/Senior) you will be expected to lead the organ retrieval team, the Cambridge National Organ Retrieval Service (NORS) team which consists of a Senior Surgeon (usually a Senior Trainee or Trust Fellow), a Junior Assistant (typically at CT level), and a Scrub Nurse.
In order to be considered applicants must meet the essential criteria outlined in the person specification section of the job description.
Please note that these posts do not carry Postgraduate Dean's approval or training recognition.
Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of commencement.
Working for your organisation
The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.
Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.
It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
On-call commitments will be 1:6 (With 2 Registrars/Senior Clinical Fellows on-call each day), and on that day, the post holder will be expected, when proficient, to lead the NORS team and attend donor hospitals as directed by NHS-BT. As a member of the abdominal retrieval team, the post holder is expected to become proficient in retrieval of liver, pancreas and kidney organs from brain-dead and circulatory dead organ donors. Our unit also deliver normothermic region perfusion (NRP) retrievals and have a very active machine perfusion programme.
On-call duties will also be to assist in any organ implant surgery taking place on that day, as well as giving cover to any surgical issues arising on the transplant ward.
Initially the post holder will be supervised by more Senior Trainees or Consultants, but it is anticipated that they will be competent to perform the retrieval operation unsupervised after six months and to gain experience in organ implant surgery for all organ groups.
