Specialist Macmillan Clinical Psychologists Band 8a within the Psycho-oncology Service, Physical Health Psychology, LPFT.


A unique opportunity has arisen enabling the employment of three Band 8a Macmillan Clinical Psychologists within the Psycho-oncology Service in Lincolnshire that provides specialist help for adults with cancer across Lincolnshire both within the community and in hospital.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals to join an innovative, specialist countywide service.

Experience of working with individuals with acute and chronic physical ill-health is essential as is a passion for working flexibly with people with serious illness.


Although preference will be given to individuals appropriate for 8a posts, enquiries would be welcomed from those individuals' seeking employment in this specialist area including trainees who are soon to qualify and Clinical Psychologists who are keen to progress in their careers.

Areas of specialist knowledge are especially welcomed.

Full and part time opportunities are being offered plus the option to work in additional areas of physical health including ME/CFS, Long Covid and Paediatric Diabetes.


The speciality prides itself as being a close, tight-knit and very positive team to work in where people are very motivated to provide the best service they can using their initiative and love of working with the diverse challenges.


The focus of the work will be to offer specialist assessment and individualised therapy programmes as part of a team of Clinical Psychologists to patients who currently have or have had cancer.

All tumour types are accepted and these present different challenges. The clinical work may involve seeing patients in hospital and occasionally in their home environments.

Patients may be newly diagnosed, going through treatment, experiencing difficulties following discharge from services, or have been diagnosed with a recurrence of their cancer and may have differing levels of health.

Staff liaison, support, training, supervision and consultancy, mainly to specialist cancer nurses but also to any professionals and care staff who are seeking guidance with the psychological wellbeing of their patient, will be important aspects of the work undertaken.


Participating in the wider Physical Health Psychology specialty work would be welcomed since the specialty is close-knit and the multidisciplinary staff work together to meet the needs of their patients, share ideas and develop the services offered.

The focus of the role is to provide a comprehensive clinical psychology service to cancer MDTs in Lincolnshire, as part of the Physical Health Psychology Psycho-oncology Service.

The team provides clinical psychology services to all cancer MDTs across Lincolnshire.

The service is delivered in line with professional guidelines including the NICE Guidance for Supportive and Palliative Care and includes provision of level 4 specialist psychological assessment and therapy for patients with complex physical and psychological health needs and their carers; offering consultation, supervision and training for Cancer Nurse Specialists and other staff; and utilising research skills for general audit and service evaluation, as well as for specialty and service developments.
