    Job Description

    The project is to design and develop fuel systems in support of hydrogen powered aircraft.

    As a Senior Research Engineer specializing in hydrogen fuel systems, your role will involve designing, testing, and optimizing hydrogen storage, distribution, and propulsion systems to enable efficient and sustainable aerospace transportation. This position requires expertise in aerospace engineering, hydrogen fuel technology, system integration, and regulatory compliance.

    Key responsibilities will include;

    System Design and Integration
    • Design innovative hydrogen fuel systems tailored to aerospace platforms, considering factors such as weight, volume, performance, and safety.
    • Integrate hydrogen storage tanks, fuel cells, and propulsion systems into aircraft structures while minimizing impact on aerodynamics and structural integrity.
    Hydrogen Storage and Distribution:
    • Develop advanced hydrogen storage solutions, including cryogenic tanks, high-pressure tanks, and metal hydrides, optimized for aerospace applications.
    • Design efficient distribution systems to deliver hydrogen fuel to propulsion systems while minimizing weight, leakage, and energy losses.
    Fuel Cell and Propulsion System Development :
    • Collaborate with propulsion engineers to develop hydrogen fuel cell systems, combustion engines, or hybrid propulsion architectures suitable for aerospace vehicles.
    • Optimize fuel cell performance, efficiency, and power output through system modelling, component selection, and control strategy development.
    Performance Analysis and Simulation :
    • Utilize computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), and system simulation tools to assess the performance and behaviour of hydrogen fuel systems under various operating conditions.
    • Predict system efficiency, range, endurance, and environmental impact to inform design decisions and performance optimization efforts.
    Testing and Validation:
    • Plan and conduct ground and flight tests to validate the performance, reliability, and safety of hydrogen fuel systems in real-world aerospace environments.
    • Analyse test data, identify performance anomalies, and implement design improvements based on test results and feedback.
    Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with aviation regulations, industry standards, and safety requirements governing the design, certification, and operation of hydrogen fuel systems in aerospace vehicles.
    • Interface with regulatory agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to facilitate certification and approval processes.
    Risk Assessment and Safety Analysis:
    • Conduct risk assessments and safety analyses to identify potential hazards associated with hydrogen fuel systems and develop mitigation strategies to ensure safe operation.
    • Implement safety features, fail-safe mechanisms, and emergency procedures to minimize risks and protect personnel, passengers, and assets.
    Technology Innovation and Research
    • Stay abreast of advancements in hydrogen fuel technology, aerospace propulsion, and related fields through literature review, technical conferences, and collaboration with research institutions.
    • Drive technology innovation initiatives to improve the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of hydrogen fuel systems for aerospace applications.
    Essential Skills:
    • Eng / B,Eng (hons)
    • 5+ years of experience in aerospace engineering, with a focus on propulsion systems, fuel systems, or aircraft systems integration
    • Specialized knowledge of hydrogen fuel technology, including storage, distribution, fuel cells, and combustion processes.
    • Strong analytical skills.
    • Strong understanding of aviation regulations, certification processes, and safety standards relevant to hydrogen fuel systems and aerospace vehicles.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to innovate, optimize, and troubleshoot complex aerospace systems.
    • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and interact with stakeholders at all levels.
    • Experience of general aircraft systems architecture development processes, such as ARP4754 and ARP 4761.
    Advantageous Skills
    • MATLAB
    • Experience of cryogenic systems and components.
    • Amesim / Thermo-fluid modelling for mixed phase cryogenics fluid simulation and thermos-fluid dynamics.
    • Fuel Cells and liquid gas modelling.
