    Job summary

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

    Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To participate in the provision of the full, technical echo service and be working towards BSE accreditation in the foreseeable future if not currently obtained (where funding is provided and BSE accreditation achieved, the applicant will be contracted to stay within the department for (2) years post-accreditation).
  • To assist with the efficient running of the technical service by prioritising daily workload.
  • To maintain standards of technical competency in the provision of non-invasive, technical cardiac procedures.
  • To assist lead echocardiographers in prioritising inpatient requests for echocardiograms on a daily basis by liaising with ward/medical staff and ensuring availability of technical staff and resources in conjunction with the Lead Echocardiographers and Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist.
  • To be responsible for the day to day area of work, ensuring that all equipment is operational, that all equipment and non-disposable items are cleaned, and that stock levels are sufficiently maintained.
  • To be responsible for identifying equipment faults, and directly resolve fault issues by reporting them in a timely manner to lead echocardiographers and/or lead physiologists.
  • To provide interpretation and full technical reports performed and be involved in reviewing/assisting with the reporting of studies performed by junior staff members.
  • To effectively, promptly, and professionally respond to emergency situations maintaining control and requesting assistance as necessary.
  • To assist with research studies as required.
  • To assist during the full range of non-invasive cardiac procedures undertaken within the department when necessary.
  • To remain up to date with latest trends in clinical physiology translating these into practice and transferring this knowledge to staff within ones area of responsibility.
  • To ensure all patients receive appropriate and individualised care.
  • To undertake service provision and/or training in other areas of Clinical Physiology, as required.
  • To be available to participate in the 7-day working rota for echocardiography.
  • Managerial :

  • To deputise for the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist and /or Lead Echocardiographer when necessary for management of the department.
  • To be responsible for the management of junior cardiac physiology personnel.
  • To assist with the recruitment and retention of staff within the department.
  • To assist lead echocardiographers with all aspects of the organisation and performance of the echo service including management of the echo rota if/when necessary.
  • To work with the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist where necessary to ensure procedures are in place to achieve Government targets in Cardiac Physiology echo services.
  • To assist the lead echocardiographers with the development/alteration of protocols, guidelines, and policies within the department in order to achieve IQIPS accreditation.
  • To implement local policies and guidelines and ensure these are adhered to at all times and ensure these incorporate current professional recommendations and evidence based practice
  • To work in accordance with standards set by the British Society for Echocardiography, the Society for Cardiological Sciences and Technology (SCST), and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP)
  • To become familiar with the use of Cerner, PRISM, CRIS, and any other computerised systems integral to the running of the department.
  • Communication with manufacturers/suppliers regarding stock and/or equipment management; ensuring adequate stock control and that staff are aware of economical use of supplies
  • To manage own time to achieve a balance between clinical and administrative duties.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties at the discretion of the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist or his deputies.
  • Personnel:

  • To conduct self in a professional manner and act as a role model to junior staff at all times.
  • To undertake service provision and/or training in other areas of Clinical Physiology, as required.
  • To demonstrate leadership, achieving good morale with open communication between all levels of staff and disciplines.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the correct reporting and handling of incidents and accidents.
  • Educational:

  • To actively participate and commit to maintaining own personal professional development, identifying educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist and Lead Echocardiographer.
  • O nce BSE accredited, to maintain professional accreditation through appropriate Continuous Professional and Personal Development.
  • To ensure that own mandatory training is up to date.
  • To participate in the training and development of local competencies of junior staff within echo and, if necessary, within other areas of the department.
  • To actively maintain a progressive learning environment for all grades and disciplines of staff within the area of responsibility.
  • To support a rigorous training programme within the department ensuring all physiologists attain state registration.
  • Administration:

  • To register patient attendances on the departments PRISM database
  • To book appointments onto Cerner / PRISM, facilitating patient choice
  • To be trained in the use of CRIS system
  • To carry out general clerical duties to include photocopying, filing, and faxing.
  • To be familiar with Cerner / PAS to track patient progression, case notes, and patient demographics and episode details.
  • To order portering services on the Cerner / Patient Administration System (PAS) to facilitate movement of patients and/or equipment.
  • To collect, collate, and disseminate results to requesting doctors, secretaries, clinics, wards, and other hospitals.
  • To communicate efficiently on the telephone with all staff, patients, and visitors
  • To maintain cleanliness and tidiness in the department.
  • To assist with effective stock control within the ECG department.
  • To be cost-effective in the use of equipment and resources.
  • To telephone patients who fail to attend for their appointment, rebooking patients as per patient choice, and to telephone outstanding returns of ambulatory monitors.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties at the discretion of the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist or his deputies.
  • To conduct self in a professional manner and act as a role model to junior staff/students at all times.
  • To undertake training in other areas of Clinical Physiology, as required.
  • To amend patient bookings to reflect any changes in their procedure from that initially booked onto the database.
  • To support the department and organisation by carrying out any other duties that reasonably fit within the broad scope of a job of this grade and type of work.

  • BSc (Hons) Cardiac Physiology / Clinical Physiology or Equivalent
  • Working towards BSE accreditation or Equivalent
  • Basic / Immediate Life Support Certificate
  • Desirable

  • Experience & Skills

    Essential

  • Substantive physiological measurements experience in Cardiac Diagnostics
  • Able to perform and report upon unsupervised TTEs in-line with BSE standards.
  • Sound knowledge of normal/abnormal values within echocardiography
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work cross-site and weekends
  • Desirable
