Kitchen Porter
Overview:
The Kitchen Porter will:
- assist in providing a clean and well-ordered working environment for the catering team and to assist in some basic food preparation
Salary:
£10.00 per hour (increasing with the real living wage in April)
Pension:
There is eligibility to join a non-contributory pension scheme.
Working hours:
Averageof 30 hours per week, with 31 hours worked during term time (31 weeks) of which 6 weeks are block weeks and hours increase to 37.5 per week.
In college vacation weeks, 27.5 hours. Normal working days are Monday to Friday.Specific working hours:
Term time: 9am to 3pm, Mon - Fri, (9am to 7pm on Tues)
Block weeks (6 per year - 1 every half term) 10am - 7pm, Mon - Thurs, 9am - 3pm on Fri
Vacation time: 9am to 3pm, Mon - Fri
There will be a few Saturdays and may also include some evenings.
In addition, there is a half-hour unpaid lunch break - lunch is provided free of charge when available (two half hours on long working days).
Where extra time is worked our normal policy is to take time off in lieu. There may be scope for extra work where external conferences cannot be accommodated within normal working hours. These hours include a half-hour break each day and will be paid as over time.Relationships:
- reports to Head Chef
- works closely with other members of the kitchen team
Main responsibilities:
- to wash dishes, etc. using commercial dishwasher
- to wash cooking pans etc. by hand
- to wash, dry and put away kitchen equipment
- to wash kitchen appliances, work surfaces, floors and walls
- to ensure the kitchen area is kept tidy
- to help organise the storeroom
- to assist with basic food preparation
- to assist with serving and clearing meals
- to upload deliveries from suppliers
- to assist with other duties as required

Essential qualities:
- Physical fitness
- Friendly personality
- Attention to detail and to see a job through
- Good awareness of hygiene standards
- A 'can do' and proactive attitude, prepared to help out the rest of the team in a willing and positive manner

- Ability and willingness to work additional shifts in the evenings and at weekends
Desirable qualities:
- Basic Food Hygiene Certificate
- Experience in the catering industry
