    PART TIME ROLE - HOURS PER WEEK

    We are excited to able to offer an opportunity to join the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust on the Laurel Suite- Oncology/Haematology unit at Stepping Hill Hospital. As a Trust we are passionate about getting it right for patients and their families. To be able to achieve this we are looking for a caring, hard working and enthusiastic staff nurse (Band 5).

    The Oncology/Haematology unit cares for patients and their families throughout their cancer journey providing individualised care from start to finish. We have gained the Christie Quality Mark for patient experience and our last unit CQC report was Outstanding.

    Main duties of the job

    To provide nursing care and advice to patients requiring treatment for malignant and non-malignant solid oncological tumours and haematological cancers/ disorders.

    Treatments include administration of IV , SC, IM and oral SACT. Other Anti-Cancer treatments and supportive treatments are also given on the unit, such as; Monoclonal Therapies, IV Immunoglobulins, Blood and Platelets transfusions, Biphosphonate and pamidronate infusions, Venesections, IV Fluids.

    The post holder must possess the ability to work unsupervised following competency assessment and co-ordinate the oncology/haematology day case unit in the absence of more senior staff.

    Job responsibilities

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • As part of the haematology/oncology team, help achieve and maintain a high standard of patient care
  • Assist in providing a seamless service for oncology & haematology patients by working as part of a multidisciplinary team, liaising with other medical staff, specialist nurses and hospital departments as required
  • Administer complex intravenous drug therapies, including those requiring Central Venous Access Devices.
  • Maintains professional and safe standards of care and report divergence from them to the relevant senior staff
  • Assists in maintaining a safe environment for patients, carers and staff
  • Accurately completes all documentation and patient records.
  • Supports and counsels distressed patients and relatives affected by the consequences of a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment
  • Maintains safe custody and administration of medicines concordant with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Trust and Network policies. Report untoward occurrences to the Unit Manager
  • Upholds the Nursing and Midwifery Council code of conduct

  • Provide a safe and secure environment by diffusing difficult situations in which patients/visitors may become violent or abusive

  • Possess IT skills, to obtain web based patient results, send and receive e-mail, compile reports etc as required
  • Responsibility for Patient Care

  • Assess, plan and evaluate the care of chemotherapy patients without supervision
  • Awareness of the physical, psychological and emotional needs of patients and carers
  • Administer complex intravenous drug therapies, including those which require central venous lines
  • Possess skills in the management of chemotherapy related side effects
  • Awareness of potential haematological emergencies and the treatment of such
  • Adhere to Trust and Cancer Network policies relating to the safe handling, storage and administration of cytotoxic drugs
  • Participate in the education and support of patients undergoing chemotherapy and their carers, giving any necessary instructions clearly and according to set protocols
  • Give accurate telephone advice to patients who may be experiencing problems at home
  • Planning and organising

  • Organise and plan own day to day workload or activities in order to meet the demands of the role
  • Assist in the day to day running of the unit, taking charge in the absence of more senior staff
  • Liaising with the aseptics team to ensure a seamless delivery of treatments to patients

  • Ensure safe and efficient use of equipment, resources and consumables at all times
  • Assist and advise on the ordering of stores and equipment when necessary.

  • General Duties

    Hand Hygiene

    To assist the Trust in reducing healthcare acquired infections (HCAIs) all staff should be familiar with all the Trusts Infection Prevention policies which are appropriate to their role. You are required to attend mandatory training in Infection Prevention and be compliant with all measures known to be effective in reducing HCAIs

  • If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £ This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

    Education and Qualifications

    Essential

  • Registered General Nurse
  • Degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification
  • Desirable

  • Evidence of post registration education in issues relating to oncology/haematology/chemotherapy/cancer care.
  • UKONs Experience and Sign Off
  • Knowledge

  • Awareness of current professional nursing issues in oncology/haematology and cancer care
