    Job summary

    The Paediatric Histopathology Department at Cambridge University Hospital is looking for a qualified Biomedical Scientist to become part of the busy Paediatric Histopathology Team. This is a one year fixed term contract for 15 hours per week. The successful applicant must have completed their IBMS Registration Portfolio, and be registered with the HCPC.

    The role will work in the histology laboratory and carry out a number of tasks including embedding, microtomy, frozen sections and assisting with specimen dissection sessions.

    Main duties of the job

    To practice as a Biomedical Scientist in Histopathology in the paediatric specialty.

    Perform a wide range of routine healthcare science activities including specimen receipt, specimen preparation including assisting pathologists at cut-up, embedding and microtomy of surgical tissue, slide collation, specimen storage and maintenance of equipment

    Maintain clinical and maintenance records in relation to activities carried out.

    Demonstrate own duties to new or less experienced employees.

    The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • IBMS Accredited Biomedical Science degree or equivalent (or working towards)
  • IBMS Certificate of Competence or working towards
  • Desirable

  • HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Practical experience of working within Biomedical science laboratory
  • Desirable

  • Practical experience of working in a Histopathology Department
  • Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS
  • Knowledge

  • Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of Biomedical procedures gained through BSc or equivalent
  • Desirable

  • Knowledge of Histopathology procedures
  • Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems
