Nottingham University Hospitals are looking for an enthusiastic consultant Histopathologist with experience in Perinatal and paediatric pathology to join our experienced and highly motivated team at the Queens Medical Centre campus.
The successful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register / or be eligible for inclusion on the specialist register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK.
Applicants should have established skills in histopathology with specialist training in paediatric pathology. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.
Dedicated laboratory facilities inclusive of Faxitron image assessment, macroscopic photography and a full array for Immunohistochemical and Genomic assays are available.
The appointee, in collaboration with the other consultants will be expected to fulfil the following duties with the agreed Job Plan.
- Clinicians at NUH.
- Other users of the histopathology service within the Nottinghamshire ICS
- Other hospitals that hold service level agreements for specialist services with NUH.
- To take a lead role in the development of specialist diagnostic techniques to meet the increasing demands of clinical users.
- To be involved in the training of Specialty trainees, scientific and BMS staff.
- Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave
- To contribute, as required, to the teaching of pathology to undergraduates and postgraduates within the Medical School of University of Nottingham.
- To take part in Medical Audit and Quality Control.
- To pursue a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists and to participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and Consultant appraisals.
- To contribute to the requirements of Clinical Governance.
- To share in the administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory.
The Cellular Pathology department is a large NHS laboratory, serving both campuses in Nottingham, dealing with approximately 68,000 requests equating to 110,000 surgical specimens including 7000 non-gynaecological cytology specimens per annum.
A busy mortuary provides services in morbid anatomy to Nottingham and Sherwood Forest Hospitals, and to the local Coroner, with a volume of 2000 cases per year.
Regional services are provided for Neuropathology, Paediatric surgical and Perinatal pathology. We have 32 WTE consultant staff including 3.2 WTE academic staff with honorary consultant contracts.
Digital pathology reporting is well established at NUH using Indica Labs Halo software and Hamamatsu scanners inclusive of IMF scanning capabilities.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a full time (10PA) consultant post, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the successful applicant.
The post holder will be expected to provide advice on the diagnosis, staging and prognosis of patients suffering from disease.
Take joint responsibility with colleagues for quality assurance within the department including taking part in national external quality assurance programmes, where appropriate.
Work with relevant clinical teams in the provision of comprehensive Cellular Pathology service to the users, including advice regarding appropriate specimen collection and investigations, interpretation of reports and the preparation of policies, procedures and guidelines.
