In support of the Theatre Clinical Manager, is responsible for the operational management of specific specialities within the theatre department.

In conjunction with the other Team Leaders, is responsible for the operational management of the Operating Department in the absence of the Theatre Manager.

To be a Clinical Specialist and Team Leader in their respective fields. To provide clinical management, advice, support and training to all relevant personnel within the department.


To ensure the provision of safe and high quality patient care and to work within the guidelines of the Trust Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated practitioner to lead our experienced anaesthetic team.

We are seeking a qualified professional with excellent and efficient anaesthetic skills and the ability to lead our group of skilled and dedicated anaesthetic practitioners.

The department is situated in Brighton and consists of 9 Theatres spread across two main operating suites.


We care for patients before, during and after some of the most demanding and complex operations in ENT/maxilla-facial, colorectal, vascular, gynaecology and obstetric, orthopaedic and upper gastro-intestinal.

You will have the motivation, vision and leadership qualities necessary to lead a safe, productive and efficient anaesthetic team.

As a key member of that team, you will have the ability to support, teach and develop junior staff and facilitate the delivery of high standards of patient care in the operating theatres.

Your role will also require providing safe patient care within outlying anaesthetic service areas of the hospital. To be empathetic and be able to remain calm and steady under pressure.

This role also requires a reassuring manner and the understanding of the rights, privacy & dignity and safeguarding of all patients.

You must have an ODP qualification or be an RN1 with a proven record within these specialties.

  • Effectively manage a multidisciplinary team in order to deliver a safe, efficient and high quality service within his/her sphere of responsibility, in at times, a highly stressful environment, including emergency situations.
  • Plan and organise a broad range of highly complex activities, to ensure the smooth running of the areas within his/her sphere of responsibility, ensuring availability of appropriate resources such as staffing and equipment.
  • Assist in managing the safe provision of services to other departments, e.g. obstetrics.
  • Ensure the team achieve the Trusts financial objectives within the Trusts business plan.
  • Ensure that the team adhere to the professional objectives laid out in the Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.
  • Ensure that accurate and contemporaneous records are confidentially maintained within the specialist areas.
  • Ensure that information systems are maintained that all staff are trained in the use of relevant IT systems.
  • Ensure the safe control, custody of all drugs within the peri-operative area following the relevant Trust Policy and national legislation.
  • In conjunction with the Theatre Manager and Matron participate in the management of change as required by senior Division/Trust management.
  • Identify and instigate change in clinical practice as necessary, using proven change management theory.
  • Ensure incident reporting procedure is followed and acted upon as appropriate.
