    Our Medical Physics Technical Services team based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Cancer Centre, Birmingham, is recruiting for a Principal Clinical Technologist (Radiotherapy Engineering).

    We are hugely proud of our department and the equipment we have, and our highly specialised team are pivotal in ensuring that the repair and maintenance work is completed to the highest standards. You will help lead the team responsible for nine linear accelerators, including six Elekta VersaHD units, two Accuray Tomotherapy machines, and an Accuray Radixact.

    Eligibility to join the Register of Clinical Technologists is essential.

    An excellent and demonstrable track record of supervision, training and teaching of other staff is essential as the appointee will have responsibility for the supervision and training of engineering staff and apprentices.

    All shortlisted candidates will be expected to undertake a practical and written test as part of the interview process.

    Main duties of the job

    The ideal candidate will have a degree in engineering or equivalent experience, will also have significant practical experience and highly specialist expertise of clinical technology across a range of work procedures relating to radiotherapy technology. Extensive specialist knowledge of electronic and mechanical engineering practice and the ability to deploy innovative skills to develop work procedures is also required. You will be organised, self-motivated and possess excellent fault finding and communication skills. The ability of the candidate to manage and co-ordinate the work of themselves and others is essential, as are good communication and leadership skills.

    The post holder is an Advanced Engineering Practitioner in a team of Clinical Technologists within Medical Physics Technical Services (MPTS) engaged in the maintenance, modification, calibration and Quality Assurance of highly complex clinical equipment, and takes responsibility for a number of specified Areas of Responsibility.

    The post holder is responsible for aspects of performance management of trainees within Technical Services and the overall training management within this section -- including the provision of appropriate training for other Health Care Professionals requiring familiarity or competence in either the operation and Quality Assurance (QA) of radiotherapy equipment or engineering aspects of Medical Physics activities.

    The post holder deputises for the Head of Technical Services as necessary.

    Essential

  • *BSc Hons Clinical Technology or equivalent and knowledge and experience to Post graduate diploma level.
  • *Incorporated-level Engineer or eligible to be a member of a relevant professional body
  • *Registered Clinical Technologist, or eligibility to become Registered Clinical Technologist
  • Experience

  • *Evidence of Continual Professional Development.
  • *Significant practical experience and highly specialist expertise gained through training (including manufacturers' courses) on linear accelerators, simulators, and other radiotherapy equipment, associated radiotherapy systems ( Treatment Management System) and Medical Physics equipment ( dosimetry equipment).
  • *Significant practical experience in procedures within Areas of Responsibility, including complex techniques and design (including CAD).
  • *Track record of ability to deploy highly level analytical, interpretation and judgement skills to make decisions outside written protocols and to solve unpredictable clinical / technical problems involving complex facts and comparison of a range of options.
  • *Worked understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure or human error and of the critical requirement for accuracy in Quality Control of radiotherapy equipment.
  • *Demonstrable experience of displaying effective leadership behaviours in a clinical technical setting.
  • *Highly developed specialist knowledge of clinical technology across a range of work procedures relating to medical equipment support, repair and Quality Control, particularly in the field of radiotherapy technologies.
  • *Extensive specialist knowledge practice within Areas of Responsibility including knowledge of components, systems and design, and the ability to deploy innovative skills to develop work procedures.
  • *Extensive knowledge and practical experience of a range of specialist treatment machine Quality Assurance procedures including radiation dosimetry Quality Assurance and adjustment of radiation beam parameters.
  • *Extensive knowledge of the hazards, including ionising radiation, encountered in medical equipment maintenance and production activities and the necessary precautions.
  • *Knowledge and experience of the NHS working environment within a quality management system.
  • *Knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, procedures and practices, ISO 9001:2015, relevant BSI and ISO standards, Health and Safety at Work Act, RIDDOR, COSHH, IRR, IR(ME)R, and the Data Protection Act.
  • *Knowledge of standard core NHS HR policies.
