As a Head of Legal - Retail you will join us on our journey and undertake a truly visible and valuable role.

The purpose of the role is to support the Retail business area of the Post Office on a broad range of commercial matters.


Leading the Retail legal team in managing all aspects of legal and regulatory risk relevant to the Post Office's retail business including management of commercial issues arising in connection with Post Office's network of approx.

11,500 branches.

The role requires an ability to identify and solve strategic and operational legal issues whilst working proactively with stakeholders, ensuring succinct, accurate and timely advice to the business and ensuring that legal input is obtained on all relevant projects and other matters.


Additionally, the role will support the broader legal team to achieve their strategic objectives and you will work closely with the Group Legal Director and other heads of Legal.

This key leadership role will be responsible for creating an inclusive, supportive, resilient and friendly working environment and work effectively with external stakeholders to manage legal risks through use of external lawyers is critical.


Principle Accountabilities will include ensuring the provision of high quality, prompt, and pragmatic legal support, prepare briefing notes and update stakeholders on the progress.

Ensuring compliance with relevant legislative, regulatory, and contractual requirements and governance processes are achieved. Continuous improvement and training to the wider business and mentor and develop team members.

What you'll need to succeed:


  • You will be an experienced Qualified solicitor or barrister with experience of managing a team.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of commercial law and corporate law (public law experience is advantageous).
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills and the ability to clearly present complex legal matters/risks for senior and nonlegal management internally and externally.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading through others and developing high performing teams and operating at a senior level with peers and stakeholders quickly.
  • Ability to translate complex legal and compliance requirements into practical workable solutions.
  • Able to thrive in a fastmoving environment and deliver against deadlines.
  • Continuing compliance with SRA/Bar Council Code of conduct, in relation to professional conduct, ethics and client care and the SRA's/Bar Council's continuing professional development requirements and eligible to be authorised to practice as a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales and or entitled to practice as a Barrister.
