Job summary:

This is a pivotal role in the Strategy, Coordination and Resources team.

We sit at the heart of DIT's two Trade Policy Groups, responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of the Government's international trade policy agenda.

The Groups comprise of Trade Negotiations Group, responsible for delivering the UK's Free Trade Agreement (FTA) programme, and Trading Systems Group, responsible for championing the rules-based international system and delivering the UK's trade disputes function.

Job description:


You will build a close working relationship with the Director General (DG) for Trading Systems and maintain strong strategic and operational oversight of the key issues in the Trading Systems portfolio.

You will lead on bespoke initiatives and projects in support of the DG's priorities and will line manage their Private Office, responsible for ensuring the DG's priorities are communicated and implemented across the Department.


We are looking for someone who can work across a wide range of distinct, complex policy and operational areas, driving forward policy, planning, and strategy development in an ambiguous and fast changing environment.


As Chief of Staff for DG Trading Systems, you will lead on strategic planning on behalf of the group and provide advice to the DG and the Senior Leadership Team on prioritisation and delivery.

You will be responsible for all fiscal events in Trading Systems Group, including Spending Review, business planning and outcome delivery planning.

You will work closely with Finance and HR business partners to support senior management with resourcing decisions and to ensure budgets are managed effectively.

You will collaborate closely with your counterpart for DG Trade Negotiations to ensure your work aligns and complements each others'.


You will be comfortable delivering through others, empowering them to continue delivering high quality services and providing robust challenge where needed.

You will be an inclusive and supportive leader, nurturing your team to be the best they can be both collectively and individually, and to take pride in their work.

You will also have broader responsibility for standards and performance across the team, as well as a leadership role in the wider Directorate.


Hybrid Working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
