Salary:
£31,931 - £34,709 per annum (dependent on skills and experience).

Allowances:
Specialist Allowance of up to £4000 per annum

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a mechanical engineer to join the team handling mechanical design engineering for the ISIS particle accelerator.

You will work closely with a team of engineers as well as operations groups to maintain existingequipment and develop new equipment for upgrades throughout ISIS.

The scope of work varies from individual components through to new beamlines and feasibility studies on the next version of the particle accelerator for ISIS-II.


Your work will involve working closely with scientists, technicians and fellow engineers to develop a wide range of bespoke accelerator equipment from the initial concept through the entire project lifecycle, including working closely with operations teamson the installation and removal of old equipment where appropriate.

You will perform design engineering duties, lead the procurement and receipt of equipment, and plan the handover and installation of said equipment.

You will include safety in all of yourdesign and work with operations to ensure that safe work practices are carried out.

You will aid in the development of new engineers by sharing your knowledge and experience with others.

You will make use of hands on, practical engineering experience to maximiseease of manufacture and assembly of your own designs and those of your colleagues.


Person Specification
The below criteria will be assessed through shortlisting and interviews:

  • HND or higher degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills including quality of cover letter, written communication, presentation skills and a proven ability to collaborate, negotiate and team build
  • Experience in a mechanical design environment developing, designing, procuring, testing and reporting on the development of technically complicated engineering equipment. Experience with particle beams, magnets, vacuum, accelerating cavities, cleanlinessand surface finishing, and/or materials joining is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of fundamental mechanical engineering principles, e.g., materials, stress/strain, and heat transfer
