    Job summary

    We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated doctors to join our team in the Paediatric Emergency Department at St Mary's Hospital. This job is ideal for trainees who wish to gain confidence and competencies in the assessment and management of acutely ill and injured children, and who are considering training in paediatrics or emergency medicine.

    St Mary's Hospital is a busy Major Trauma Centre in London, and has a range of paediatric medical and surgical specialities, including PID, Haematology, Neurology, Allergy, Renal and PICU. It is one of the key trusts in the North London Paediatric Specialist Network, and an internationally respected academic and research unit. The department is staffed by dedicated paediatric nurses and led by a team of PEM consultants. Trainees come from both paediatric and emergency medicine backgrounds on a 2-tier rota.

    We are looking for dedicated doctors who have completed their foundation training, and have a real interest in Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine. Experience in Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine is desirable, although we will consider suitable candidates without.

    Candidates must have had at least 1 year experience of paid working in the NHS in the UK ("observer ships" do not count).

    The post will have some protected time to participate in Quality Improvement or Educational projects, and we have consultants with key interests in Research, Simulation and Quality Improvement.

    Main duties of the job

    Doctors, under the supervision of the consultant and senior trainees, will see all varieties of presentations (medical and trauma), to gain experience in all aspects of emergency care in children. We are supported by the inpatient paediatric team, as well as the paediatric and surgical specialties.

  • To provide initial assessment and treatment of children brought to the Emergency Department
  • To gain experience in the resuscitation of critically unwell and injured children
  • To complete quality improvement projects to improve the care the department can provide for it's patients

    Job responsibilities

    Clinical Duties:

  • To provide safe and effective clinical care to children in the department, under the supervision of the Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant, in accordance with departmental and trust clinical guidelines and evidence.
  • To help provide on-going care for children on CDU, who are likely to go home within the next few hours, and to help treat and escalate if these children become more unwell.
  • To help with the resuscitation and stabilisation of significantly injured or sick children.
  • To help perform procedures including minor orthopaedic procedures, suturing etc
  • To be responsible for good safety netting and signposting on discharge, and ensuring the safety of children on discharge from the department.
  • To provide good communication with nursing staff and colleagues, and work cohesively as part of the team.
  • To help support, and learn from, colleagues with differing clinical backgrounds
  • To liaise effectively with colleagues from different specialties, and with HCP in the community (GP, midwife, school nurses etc).
  • To effectively use the computerised system for patient records, ordering, results and communication (discharge letters).
  • To ensure all safeguarding concerns are addressed and communicated.

    This post will have some non-clinical time allocated for projects and education. The department has a wealth of expertise in many aspects of paediatric emergency medicine, and in educational and quality improvement work. We will expect the successful candidate to undertake significant projects in one or more of the following areas during their time with us:

  • Paediatric Trauma
  • Research projects in Paediatric EM
  • Quality Improvement
  • Education and Simulation
  • Sepsis
  • Tropical and Infectious Diseases in ED
  • Ambulatory care and SDEC

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • On GMC registered/ licensed Medical Practitioner
  • Desirable

  • Membership of Royal College exams ( MRCPCH, MRCEM, MRCP, MRCS etc)
  • Academic achievements including research/publications

  • Understanding of research in acute care settings
  • Desirable

  • Publication in peer review journal
  • Language

    Essential

  • Ability to speak and write English to IELTS level 7 or above (IELTS completed if required.)
  • Audit

  • Evidence of participation in Quality Improvement projects

  • Completion of QI project / audit cycle
  • Presentation to a regional or national group / conference
