Description
The Role

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join our externally funded project on Revitalising Crafts.

This project is investigating a unique curriculum experiment at the University of Cape Verde in which art education students are apprenticed to local craftspeople for nine months to learn their traditional craft skills.

The research consists of an interaction study, supported by fieldwork and interviews.

Craft knowledge is a bodily form of knowledge acquired through doing; consequently, video recording the processes involved in the interaction between the craftworkers and students around making is the main data collection tool.

In analysing this data, we will pay special attention to modalities understood to characterise apprenticeship training, such as guided instruction and hands-on mentoring of practical work.

The Research Assistant is required to transcribe and code recorded video tapes. Interview transcription and translation will be conducted in Portuguese to English. The co-researcher in Portugal will oversee the transcription and translation into English prior to data analysis.

The Research Assistant with knowledge of coding methods used in interaction analysis and of Portuguese language is needed to transcribe and code the tapes before this data is analysed at the start of year 2.

The work will be up to 108 hours for the period of the contract and it is expected that the work will commence from Late January 2023.

You

You will need to be bilingual in Portuguese (preferably European Portuguese) and English in both speaking and writing, a willingness to learn to transcribe some Cape Verdean Creole and experience of making transcripts for research purposes.

It is desirable to have familiarity with Cape Verde Portuguese and Cape Verde Creole and multimodal Conversation Analysis transcription methods.

An interest in the interaction analysis of video data and an interest in art and craft education is also desirable.

Experience of working with machine transcription of Portuguese is also preferable.
