This Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine substantive post is designed to complete our cohesive Consultant team of four, in delivering comprehensive Acute and Rehabilitation Stroke and TIA Services.


You will provide individualised care based on multi-disciplinary holistic assessment of the individual care needs of people who present with stroke., training in Neurology and or Geriatrics would be as welcome and there is scope to adjust job plans to match your interests to the needs of the service and you will become a part of very active Stroke Research Unit with a reputation as the top recruiter in many trials.


We currently have a 24/7 Consultant rota, but are looking to share a Stroke rota amongst the Essex Success Regime Hospitals as the Trust has a single independent Specialist Hyper Acute Stroke Unit in one geographical location and a Specialist Stroke team which has led to a 50% reduction in mortality and dependency and almost all stroke inpatients spending all their hospital stay on the Stroke Unit, we offer a 7 days/week 9.00am consultant - led multidisciplinary ward round for all new suspected Stroke/TIA admissions and a daily review of all other patients on Stroke Unit.

The JD is currently with the Royal College for approval.


Your role will involve multidisciplinary Rehabilitation of Stroke patients on the Stroke ward including meetings with relatives, weekly Outpatient clinics providing for new referrals and medical follow up for recently discharged stroke patients and other patients, strong links with diagnostic imaging, Vascular Surgery, Cardiology and Neurology and on-going educational programme for all disciplines within the department and lectures to GPs and other interested groups.


You will provide comprehensive Stroke Thrombolysis service, a best-endeavour Stroke Thrombectomy service and a Rapid Assessment Clinic for TIA/Minor Stroke patients held five days a week where suspected new stroke/TIA patients are seen per week.


You will also be involved in our service for high risk TIA patients at weekends and bank holidays, the seven day a week service includes same day CT or MRI scan and Carotid Doppler and we are currently achieving our performance targets for high risk and low risk patients whilst looking to adapt this service in view of the latest RCP guidelines.
