    Senior Nurse for Mental Health

    Who We Are

    As NHS Scotland's unique provider of a national tele-health and tele-care service, we are responsible for the delivery of health advice and information by telephone and online services to the population of Scotland 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. NHS 24 is a patient-focused service providing the people of Scotland with triage, advice, guidance, referral and information on health and healthcare services.

    We have six regional centres – Aberdeen, Dundee, South Queensferry, Hillington, Cardonald and Clydebank. NHS 24 supports hybrid working, and this post can be based within any NHS 24 regional centres. The successful candidate must be within commuting distance to a regional centre to attend if required and must also be able to travel to other regional centres when requested to attend meetings, undertake training and any other activities.

    The Role

    The post holder will provide highly visible clinical leadership within NHS 24 Mental Health Services. This leadership will focus strongly on standards of care, in developing and maintaining a culture which is patient focused. The post holder, by adopting a transformational approach, will support the development of leadership at all levels in their area. The post holder will make a significant contribution to the redesign and integration of NHS 24 Mental Health Services.

    In addition to their area of lead responsibility (NHS 24 Mental Health Services) the post holder will be expected to make a significant contribution to nursing leadership across all NHS 24 Services and representing NHS 24 at National Forums. Specific programmes/ projects or tasks not directly related to the post holders lead area of responsibility will form part of their portfolio of responsibilities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Professionally lead all mental health services, providing assurance to the Lead Nurse for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities that services are underpinned by national policy, guidance and legislation.
    • Ensure patient safety by supporting the development and communications with key stakeholders within NHS Boards, Health and Social Care Partnerships and Integrated Joint Boards to continually enhance patient pathways, which will ultimately improve patient care.
    • Agree with the Lead Nurse for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities development priorities of professional nursing practice and working in conjunction with Clinical Service Managers and Operational Managers ensure the delivery of these priorities.
    • Promote a participative leadership and management style with excellent communication that encourages partnership working with all colleagues, partners and stakeholders in a manner consistent with NHS Scotland values.
    • Interpret information, taking all factors into account and using judgement, make autonomous decisions to effectively support the Clinical Services Managers and Operational Managers, for example, in terms of providing safe, effective and person centred care.

    Successful Applicant will:

    • Be educated to master's degree level.
    • Be a first level Registered Nurse in Mental Health.
    • Demonstrate evidence of working at a senior level (managerially or professionally) and developing innovative and creative nursing solutions to achieve organisational objectives.
    • Demonstrate understanding of clinical governance principles and the development of systems and frameworks to establish clear accountabilities based on professional codes of practice.

    Benefits

    NHS 24 offers a complete benefits package, with a temporary contract on Band 8A £56,992 - £61,522 Per Annum (pro rata if applicable). Placement on salary scale is dependent on confirmation of previous relevant NHS service.

    NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
