Description

The Director of Nursing is a core member of the Divisional Board and part of the Divisional Triumvirate, alongside the Clinical Chair and Divisional Director.

The Director of Nursing provides professional leadership and leadership of quality and patient experience across the division.

As a core member of the Divisional Board and of the Chief Nurse team, you will provide strategic direction of the nursing profession, in terms of workforce, education and training.


This role requires a dynamic, confident nurse leader who can shape nursing/clinical practice by utilising excellent leadership, influencing and motivational skills as well as generating new ideas that will drive forward the nursing agenda within the Division and Trust.

Excellent communication skills are required, as is the need to be flexible to adapt to the requirements of the role.


You will need to be a Registered Nurse, educated to Master's degree level or equivalent and with evidence of continuing professional development relevant to the post.

Recent nurse management/ leadership experience at a senior level within an acute setting is essential.

  • You will work collaboratively with the Matrons, Senior Nurses, Clinical Directors and lead AHPs in providing clinical leadership, promoting leadership development for all clinicians and supporting delivery of the clinical governance agenda, with specific responsibilities to lead in patient safety and patient experience areas.
  • You will provide leadership and direction for education, training and development for nursing in a multiprofessional context and in collaboration with the Human Resources Business Partner, the Clinical Directors, the lead AHP and through partnerships external to the Division and Trust.
  • You will work to ensure the Division has strong links with nursing and midwifery corporately and works consistently within the agreed corporate professional frameworks, whilst supporting the implementation of the transforming care programme.
  • As a core member of the Chief Nursing team, you will deputise for the Chief Nurse or their Deputy as required and leading on agreed corporate work streams for the Trust.
  • You will represent the Trust and Chief Nurse in any agreed multiagency, national or external forums.
