An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, high performing individual to join the maternity team as a recruitment and retention lead.

This post is new to our service and is a fixed contract or secondment for 1 year.

  • You will be responsible for overseeing supportive interventions for early and late career progression, and retention
  • Lead on the induction, orientation, training needs, pastoral support, ongoing mentoring, and career progression for these midwives.
  • Collaborate with the workforce leads and maternity senior management team in order to identify how best to personalise recruitment and retention and implement plans for improvement. You will offer career advice through the career hub and career conversations, supporting staff with their future career opportunities.
  • You will promote an environment that encourages learning and sustains the personal and professional development of staff through career conversations, career development initiatives and support.
  • You will be integral to the ongoing development of the career hub within the Trust and the benefits this bring in supporting staff to flourish and grow.


There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are planned as part of the New Hospital Programme.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

Other responsibilities of the role will be to:

  • lead the delivery of the maternity recruitment, e-rostering, and workforce planning & information functions in line with service standards, system specifications, and aligned to the Trust's strategic workforce objectives. Measuring, monitoring, and reporting performance against key performance indicators.
  • Ensure the Trust is being innovative and creative, setting itself apart from other healthcare providers in order to attract the best people to work at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Maternity to support improvements in work to enhance the retention of our maternity workforce including:
  • Accelerate recruitment efforts, including localised campaigns to attract people back to midwifery
  • Develop sustainable approaches to release clinical time. To drive workforce agenda for midwifery services to increase recruitment and retention of band 57 midwives.
  • Focus on enhancing staff experience, improving engagement, and maximising opportunities to further reduce midwifery turnover rate.
  • To oversee supportive interventions for early and late career progression, and retention plus leading on the induction, orientation, training needs, pastoral support, ongoing mentoring, and career progression for midwives.
  • Develop recruitment plans and undertake recruitment fairs
  • Promote an environment that encourages learning and sustains the personal and professional development of staff through career conversations, coaching, career development initiatives and support
  • Collaborate closely with Director of midwifery and maternity management team to reduce unavailability of staff due to sickness by understanding patterns of sickness, undertake sickness return interviews, leavers interviews
  • Work with Human resources partners in supporting staff to return to work following long time sickness.
  • Work with staff and signpost them to support services before sickness is taken.
  • Work closely with Human resources and temporary staffing to reduce bank and agency usage.
  • Work closely with NHSP and the workforce led to identify new recruits and agencies who may wish to partner with West Herts
  • Support international recruited of midwives and integrate staff into existing teams.
  • Release some midwifery matron time back to improving quality and safety care for women and birthing people.
