    Job overview

    As a band 6 you will need to be able to demonstrate significant competence at leading shifts, knowledge and experience in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, and to be competent in chemotherapy administration. A post registration Paediatric Oncology course is required or a commitment to undertake this within the year for all band 6 roles.

    You will be expected to manage a team in order to undertake appraisals and support the implementation of personal development plans, particularly by facilitating clinical objectives, whilst at all times work within the framework of the NMC code of professional conduct, NICE guidelines and hospital policy.

    Furthermore, as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse your responsibilities will primarily be ward based though you will be expected to carry the Senior Nurse Bleep on an ad hoc basis, attending Paediatric Cardiac Arrest calls and maintaining safe staffing levels throughout the unit.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will be responsible for competently providing safe and effective care, without supervision to children requiring in-patient hospitalisation and day stay care facilities. Assess care needs, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care. Participate in the supervision, teaching, mentorship and appraisal of pre and post registration staff.

    Regularly co-ordinate the management of care delivered by nursing and non-nursing support staff, taking charge of the ward in the absence of the ward manager. Demonstrate leadership ability

    Person specification Qualifications

    • First level registration RSCN/RN(Child) (part 8 or 15)
    • Level 3 Child Protection training
    • Evidence of continuing professional development

    Experience

    • Significant experience at band 5 within an acute paediatric in-hospital oncology setting
    • Experience of leading a shift
    • Evidence of leadership and management roles
    • Previous experience at Band 6
    • Experience of caring for children in high dependency or critical care areas
    • Experience of sickness and performance management

    Knowledge

    • Understanding of how paediatric oncology services are organised across the region
    • Works within the boundaries of government directives and professional nursing issues
    • Evidence of up to date paediatric nursing skills and knowledge.
    • Current knowledge of research developments in paediatric nursing

    Skills

    • Provide competent care for children and their families in a safe and effective manner without supervision.
    • Can competently deliver chemotherapy
    • Effective team member
    • Able to support junior staff to provide care for the patient group.
    • Advocate of paediatric nursing
    • Evidence of participation in research and audit projects
