Apprentice Environmental Advisor - London - 2024


Joining Skanska as an Apprentice Environmental Advisor, you will support the delivery of the construction and handover phase of the HS2 (High Speed Two) Main Works project.

You will initially be based with our Tunnels & Shafts team.


You will gain experience in many aspects of environment and sustainability management but also wider exposure to the delivery of this leading civil engineering construction project.


Skanska is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels) in a joint venture with Costain and STRABAG, forming SCS Joint Venture - JV).

Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks, and the construction of site compounds.


What you will learn:


  • Understand the client and joint venture partners' Environment and Sustainability policies, processes and statutory requirements
  • Monitor and collect data to aid reporting on performance against targets
  • Undertake internal inspections and audits, including targeted risk monitoring, both on site and within the supply chain.
  • Assist with external audits
  • Provide environmental compliance advice to various team, including construction, procurement and subcontractors and suppliers on the practical implementation of contract policies, processes and requirements. Identify and provide training and upskilling required to fulfil environmental responsibilities of various delivery team roles
  • Identify and communicate environmental and sustainability risks and mitigations, assisting with the review and undertaking of risk assessments and method statements
  • Provide advice and guidance to our delivery team, and where necessary assist with the obtaining legal consents, licenses and exemptions. Maintain good working relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, Natural England, Environment Agency, Thames Water and others
  • Drive awareness for and delivery against contract targets, particularly reducing carbon and striving to achieve nonet loss in biodiversity and Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) 'Excellent' rating. Drive innovation and continuous improvement throughout the contract team.
  • Ensure works are in line with the Environmental Management System, certified to ISO 14001:2015, ensuring it remains appropriate to all contract risks.

Who you are:


  • You need to have lived in the UK in the last 3 years for us to enrol you on the apprenticeship.
  • Curious about Sustainability
  • Able and motivated to successfully complete this degree apprenticeship

Please note you need to be able to commute to either of these locations from Monday to Friday.


Working environment:

office and site based - you will spend a lot of time on a construction site and need to be able to walk on uneven surfaces.
