    based at the BGS Offices in Edinburgh (The Lyell Centre), which are situated on the Heriot-Watt University campus

    Hours:
    Full-time - 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available, including a small amount of remote working, in line with BGS policy)

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for two highly motivated and experienced Senior Marine Geoscientists to join the BGS Environmental Change Adaptation & Resilience Challenge Area.

    The Marine Geoscience Team undertakes research to develop maps and models of the shallow geology of the UK continental shelf and provides expert geological knowledge to support a range of sectors (e.g. offshore renewable energy, linear assets, habitats).

    We work closely with European partners to develop harmonised datasets that inform planning in the marine environment and provide science management for major scientific ocean-drilling projects.

    As a Senior Marine Geoscientist, you will play a key role in supporting and developing our portfolio of projects, providing leadership, project management, and proven specialist scientific expertise.

    Contributing to the development of marine geoscience research aligned with BGS strategic priorities.


    • Developing new opportunities by building relationships with research and industry partners, and by preparing grant proposals and/or bids for commercial projects.
    • Managing project teams to deliver external income and national capability projects.
    • Publishing your research in the academic literature and write and deliver comprehensive client reports to firm deadlines.
    • Contributing to the visibility of the BGS marine geoscience community, presenting at conferences, and representing the team externally to public and private sectors.

    We are looking for marine geoscientists with the skills to develop and lead projects, and the ability to develop new ideas for research, products, and services.

    You will have a PhD or an MSc and significant subsequent comparable work experience in a relevant science area, plus experience of working within a research environment.

    Experience of project management including budgetary management is essential for these roles.

    The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that belongs to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

    Senior Marine Geoscientist:
    MSc or PhD in a subject related to the role (S)
    Full driving license (S)
    Significant post graduate experience in marine geoscience with a focus on developing shallow geology maps and/or models and supporting renewable infrastructure projects (S&I)


    • A track record of developing scientific knowledge and leading outputs (e.g. technical reports, peer-reviewed papers, maps, or datasets) relevant to shallow geology of the UK continental shelf (S)
    • Experience of leading research orientated projects, including experience of managing budgets (S&I)
    • Substantial post-PhD or (even greater) post-MSc relevant work experience (S)
    • Experience of working collaboratively within and across scientific fields to achieve required outcomes (I)
    Technical knowledge of the shallow geology of the UK continental shelf and latest methods in developing geological interpretations of the seabed and shallow geology (S&I)


    • Understanding of the customer landscape for marine geoscience in the UK, including public sector, industry and academia (I)
    Evidence of ability to lead and motivate teams of people (e.g. project teams), and to lead work effectively unsupervised (S&I)


    • Ability to prioritise work and meet tight timescales, with a flexible and proactive approach to work (S&I)

    Demonstrates curiosity and a drive to research and solve scientific and technical problems (S&I)
