    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Principal Clinical Scientist (8B) to join the Clinical Biochemistry team at North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Services (NMCPS). We are looking for someone with a passion for laboratory medicine and an ability to contribute to a progressive and highly patient-focused laboratory service to join our forward thinking and dynamic team.

    Applicants must be HCPC registered and have attained the Royal College of Pathologists Part 1 and Part 2 (module 1) examinations. Applicants who have not yet attained Part 2 (module 1) will be considered for a Principal post at 8A. Support will be given for working towards FRCPath examinations and developing leadership skills.

    Main duties of the job Working alongside an established and friendly team of ten Clinical Scientists and two Consultant Chemical Pathologists the successful candidate will contribute to all areas of service provision to ensure a high quality analytical and interpretive service.

    The post holder will be required to:
    • Provide day to day clinical oversight of the automated section of the service
    • Participate in the duty biochemist and out of hours on-call rotas
    • Report protein electrophoresis
    • Manage Senior Clinical Scientists, STPs and HSSTs, under the direction of the Consultant Clinical Scientists
    • Lead clinical audit and improvement projects
    • Contribute to the departmental training and education programme
    • Support the implementation of new analytical equipment across the network, which is currently being procured

    • 1st or 2nd Class Hons Science degree
    • Completed a formal 'Grade A'/STP post graduate training programme OR to have undertaken alternative training and supervised in-service experience assessed to be to an equivalent level
    • MSc in relevant Discipline
    • HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist
    • FRCPath Part 1 (or equivalent)
    • FRCPath Part Module 1
    Desirable
    • PhD in relevant subject
    • Full RCPath
    • Completion of management and leadership training
    Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience Essential
    • Advanced knowledge of clinical biochemistry through training to master's degree and Royal College examinations.
    • Up to date knowledge of key developments in clinical biochemistry
    • Experience of analysis and interpretation of specialist biochemistry e.g. Mass Spectrometer and protein electrophoresis traces
    • Ability to provide highly specialist advise to other clinical professionals, e.g medical and nursing colleagues, on the interpretation and follow up of clinical biochemistry results
    • Able to recognize patterns of abnormality and relate them to clinical situations and assess differential diagnoses
    • Ability to interpret external quality assurance scheme reports and identify areas that require investigation and improvement.
    • Ability to process, manage, interpret data and information effectively using up to date technology and computerised information systems.
    • Experience of specialist techniques in clinical biochemistry including the development and implementation of new methodologies
    • Ability to examine up to date literature to identify areas of quality improvement
    • Experience of developing new patient testing pathways in discussion with key stake holders
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all staff grades both within and outside the laboratory.
    • Ability to convey instructions, ideas and opinions clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to support training and development and aptitude for developing staff skills and capabilities
    • Ability to initiate and support change in response to new guidance, methodology or to support the needs of users
    • Ability to work with high level of autonomy.
    • Ability to concentrate on complex data for prolonged periods with potential for frequent interruptions
    • Ability to handle exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances
    • Comfortable handling potentially hazardous or unpleasant patient samples e.g blood, faeces, urine, CSF
    • Ability to contribute to a clinical service strategy and apply it in everyday working
    Desirable
    • Experience in molecular genetics techniques
    • Publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
    • Presentations at regional or national or international scientific meetings
    • Experience of people management
    • Experience of leading the implementation of a service development
