College of Science and Engineering/ School of Physics and Astronomy

The Opportunity:


The post will provide support to the School's Projects and Events Team with the administration, organisation and secretarial support for events, activities and projects for the School of Physics and Astronomy and to a lesser degree the College as a whole.

If you enjoy variety in your tasks, then this job is for you. You will interact with academic and professional services staff, suppliers and conference delegates from all over the world.

You should have vocational qualifications (N/SVQ 3, ONC or equivalent) plus previous work experience in a related role.

Due to the nature of events and the position, you should have excellent organisational skills and the ability to juggle and prioritise competing demands.

You will interact and communicate with people at every level of their careers so excellent communication and 'people' skills are very important.


The team is based in the James Clerk Maxwell Building, on the leafy green King's Buildings campus to the South of Edinburgh and close to the Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill for convenient lunch walks.

The campus provides a number of catering outlets and is close to the Cameron Toll shopping centre.


Your skills and attributes for success:

  • School education to Standard Grade or equivalent plus typically 2 years' relevant experience.
  • Good IT Skills using MS Office, in particular Outlook, Teams and Excel.
  • Excellent communication and 'people' skills, enthusiasm, motivation and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to use initiative when problem solving and when demonstrating excellent customer service

The School runs undergraduate programmes at BSc and MPhys level in Physics, Mathematical Physics, Theoretical Physics, Computational Physics, Astrophysics and (jointly with the School of Chemistry) Chemical Physics.
