    Job Description

    We are looking for an organised and flexible individual to provide temporary editorial support to Gale Primary Sources (GPS), a publishing programme under Gale, the library publishing division of Cengage, for a period of 9-12 months to cover a maternity leave. Tasks will include working on product research, development, and production of digital collections of historical primary sources within the GPS programme, as well as supporting the GPS editorial team, assisting with proposals for new products, and overseeing key tasks in the product development life cycle.

    To be successful in this role you will need to be educated to degree level, have excellent communication skills, show a keen attention to detail, and operate as a team player. Although not essential, preference shall be shown to individuals having a demonstrable interest or degree in History or the humanities and some office experience within a publishing environment.

    This role is a hybrid arrangement, with one or more days of work per week in the Andover, Hampshire office of Cengage.

    This role comes with health care, Pension and 23 days holiday plus bank holidays, and additional Wellness days off over Christmas.

    JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATION

    Job Title: Associate Editor/editorial Assistant (Maternity Cover)

    Business Unit: Gale

    Department: Gale Publishing

    Reporting to: Manager, Acquisitions

    Line Reports: None

    Based: Hybrid, minimum 1 day per week in Andover office

    Job Purpose:

    To provide editorial and administrative support to the Gale Primary Sources (GPS) publishing programme within Gale, the library publishing division of Cengage. Tasks will include working on product research, development, and production of digital collections of historical primary sources within the GPS programme, as well as supporting the GPS editorial team, assisting with proposals for new products, supporting projects critical to the maintenance of healthy relations with institutional partners, and overseeing key tasks in the product development life cycle.

    Key Accountabilities:

    Product Development and Production

    · Product Development Research: Investigate, quantify, and collect data on source content (e.g., historical books, manuscripts, and newspapers) prior to digitisation. This will involve assessing the content for extent, physical condition, content type, rights clearance needs, privacy restrictions, and metadata requirements through online catalogues and in-person reviews at source libraries and archives.

    · Market Research : Assist with the preparation of market research for new product proposals, including sales history analyses, development of prospective customer lists, and reviews of competitor products

    · Business Case and Contract Support : Help with the preparation of business cases prior to product approval meetings, assisting with the monitoring and filing of contracts and agreements following product approvals and organising the assignment of product numbers to approved titles in line with company guidelines.

    · Permissions Oversight: Support projects and assist Editors with copyright clearance by writing, distributing, and responding to (under supervision) permissions requests.

    · Privacy Review: Coordinate with editors assessing the privacy requirements of individual products and overseeing the privacy review (and redaction process) in compliance with the requirements of source libraries and national and international law.

    · Metadata Support: Examine under the direction of the Editors the metadata requirements of individual products and remediate metadata challenges by analysing, converting, and standardising inventories, finding aids, and cataloguing data associated with individual products.

    Team Support

    · Data/Report Preparation: Support the publishing team by handling administrative requests and queries from the Editors, such as preparing sales data and assisting with the preparation of regularly scheduled reports

    · Project Meeting Attendance: Attend project production meetings and taking detailed minutes

    · Liaising Duties: Liaise under the director of Editors with Marketing and Sales to provide product-specific information on forthcoming and backlist products, such as contents lists, sample searches, sample content, slide decks and screenshots

    · General Market Research: Conduct general market research as required, including analysing current market trends and competitor activity

    General Administration

    · Keeping Cengage systems up to date, including contract records and royalty payments

    · Working with Editors to ensure payment of external parties

    · Working with Editors on coding invoices and maintaining records on relevant Cengage systems

    · Carrying out other duties as required to support the work of the GPS Publishing team

    Travel Requirements:

    The post holder may be occasionally asked to travel within the U.K., but regular travel is not required.

    Essential Role Requirements:

    Skills/knowledge

    • A strong sense of curiosity and openness to learning about topics in a variety of academic areas, with a particularly strong emphasis on history and the humanities
    • Flexible approach to tasks and a 'can do' attitude, along with a willingness to learn new skills and improve current ones.
    • Keen attention to detail and follow-through.
    • Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Solid communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Good PC skills with working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook. PowerPoint a plus.
    • Ability to work calmly in a sometimes high-pressure environment.
    • Team player suited to a team-oriented and collaborative environment, where knowledge is shared actively.
    • Discreet and respectful of confidentiality.

    Qualifications

    • Degree level or equivalent.
    • Strong interest in history or humanities preferred but not required.

    · Previous experience of working in a publishing, museum curation, or archival/special collections department of a library or archive.

    Skills/knowledge

    • Awareness of data protection. Knowledge of copyright a plus.
    • A strong interest in history or the humanities.

    • Language skills a plus.
