    NHS Grampian background
    Description
Applications are invited for Clinical Fellows in Adult Critical Care Medicine, starting in August 2024 and February 2025. These are full time posts and opportunities are available for either a twelve or a six month period.

Although the posts are not recognised as a training positions by the Postgraduate Dean or Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, they will be extremely useful for those wishing to gain additional knowledge and skills in Critical Care Medicine.

They will also be suitable for those seeking additional experience in Critical Care for equivalence (CESR) applications.

The posts can provide flexible training and we would welcome discussion with you about how these posts can be tailored to individual needs.

Opportunities are available to develop new and additional skills in extracorporeal life support, trauma management, echocardiography, education and simulation, quality improvement and research.

The department usually scores highly in the GMC National Training Survey and in the Scottish Trainee Survey.

Successful applicants will join a dedicated team of 15 Critical Care Consultants leading the Critical Care Department, in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The Critical Care Department in Aberdeen is delivered across two areas totaling 30 beds providing Level 2 and Level 3 to over 1800 patients a year.

We admit patients from across the North of Scotland and the Northern Isles and also receive patients from shipping and offshore installations.

A six bedded Cardiothoracic ICU sits adjacent to the General ICU and admits around 600 patients per annum.

All major specialties are covered within the ICU (with the exception of Transplant Surgery) including Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, Major Vascular Surgery, Major Head and Neck Surgery, Plastics, Neurosurgery and Major Trauma.

The ICU provides Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygen (ECMO) support for patients from all Scottish Health Boards requiring extracorporeal life support.

Aberdeen is the commissioned National ECMO Centre for Scotland, an ELSO Platinum Centre of Excellence and an integral part of the UK ECMO Network.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) is the largest hospital within NHS Grampian. It is situated on a self-contained 125 acre site at Foresterhill, to the north west of the city centre. It is one of the largest hospital complexes in Europe.

The campus houses Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, the Scottish National Hyperbaric Centre, the University of Aberdeen Medical and Dental School, University Institute of Medical Sciences, Health Services Research Unit, and the world renowned Rowett Research Institute.

Close links with the University of Aberdeen have made ARI a center of pioneering medical research in a number of fields.

Its close proximity to beautiful coastline, hills and awe-inspiring countryside makes it ideal for those seeking an exciting outdoor lifestyle.
