An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Behavioural Specialist within the Barking and Dagenham Community Learning Disabilities Team (B&D CLDT) within NELFT.

The post is 1.0 wte in a multi-disciplinary team working closely with health and social services colleagues to provide a well-coordinated and high quality service for adults with learning disabilities.


The post-holder will be supported by the Borough Lead Psychologist, Care Pathway Lead and the Strategic and Clinical Lead for the Learning Disabilities Psychological Service.


Our psychological therapies provision within community learning disability teams comprises clinical psychologists, clinical behavioural specialists, art therapists, systemic/family therapists, assistant psychologists, and Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling trainees from courses based in London.

Our service is developing trauma informed and culturally sensitive care for people with learning disabilities and their families. We work closely with the local IAPT service strengthening the mainstreaming agenda for people with learning disabilities.

There are good opportunities for enhancing clinical skills through CPD, peer support and service development. We have a vibrant and active R&D department.

Assessment and intervention for behaviours of concern to support adults with learning disabilities and their families and carers.


The applicant will be part of the NELFT LD Psychological Services based with the Barking and Dagenham Community Learning Disability Team (B&D CLDT).

Probationary Period

Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust.

All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment.

As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes.

The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement - London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,108 and a maximum payment of £5,177 per annum).

Key Responsibilities:

The post holder will be expected to support their team, department and organisation to achieve the Trust's Mission of 'helping you live the life you want'.


The post holder will achieve this by:

  • Providing a qualified, high-quality specialist service to individuals who present with behaviours of concern, their carers, families and groups, within and across CLDT teams, in line with best, evidence-based practice and trust care pathways.
  • Being responsible for holding and managing a behaviour of concern/behaviours that challenge clinical caseload of clients referred to the Community Learning Disability Teams and utilising planning and organisational skills, to exercise autonomous assessment, treatment and discharge of clients, within the parameters of the service operational policy and professional responsibility for the planning and prioritising of own workload.
  • To work alongside MDT professionals to provide specialist behavioural & psychology input to clients referred with behavioural challenges to the Community Learning Disability Teams.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological/behavioural aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
  • Under supervision, to employ analytical and judgment skills and be responsible for taking clinical management decisions in complex clinical issues.
  • To receive regular clinical and professional supervision from a senior clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues specialising in behavioural challenges in people with Learning Disabilities.
