ABP is seeking a dynamic and experienced Berthing Officer to join our team at the Port of Southampton.

As a Berthing Officer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient berthing of vessels, coordinating with various stakeholders to maintain the high standards of service that
ABP is known for.

You will also be required to act as the Harbour Master's representative within the Port estate and ensure
ABP's interests are safeguarded.

This is a flexible, multi-skilled role principally as a Berthing Officer but may include additional duties as a VTS Operator (including Data Centre), crewing the Port's Pilot/Patrol launches, and any other duties as required.


Accountabilities

  • Work as part of a 24/7 watch routine to ensure all vessels are planned and positioned in a correct and safe manner to best meet our customers' needs, whilst carrying out the Harbour Master's function landside.
  • Act as an ambassador for Health & Safety, helping to achieve a successful Health & Safety culture, striving towards the company's 'Beyond Zero' behavioural safety ambitions and acting as a role model for this. Ensuring compliance with health, safety and environment policies and procedures at all times.
  • Under the Marine Planning Manager, manage all daytoday marine operations within the Port of Southampton, whilst ensuring customers are aware of expectations and limitations on berth use and availability, by means of negotiation, direction and/or records as required.
  • Plan and attend all possible arrivals, departures, and movements of ships in the Port, communicating all necessary information to pilots, tugs, VTS and agents as required, whilst ensuring vessels are suitable for the berth allocated.
  • Issue instructions to Assistant Operations Managers to ensure customer expectations and vessel requirements are met, having due regard to Health & Safety.
  • Attend emergencies and exercises as a representative of the Harbour Master as requested by a HM Delegate.
  • Ensure statutory regulations and Port Byelaws are complied with, along with managing marine landside concerns with regards to waste, obstruction, and general housekeeping.
  • Assist and update PIMS as required ensuring customers / agents expectations are best managed.
  • Control costs by ensuring the Port's berths, facilities and resources are best managed effectively and efficiently.

Skills, experiences qualifications and competencies

Essential

  • Ability to use VHF Radio
  • Maritime background or commercial port experience.
  • Full Manual UK driving licence.
  • Knowledge of risk assessments and SSOW
  • Clear, concise communicator with the ability to liaise with personnel and outside bodies at all levels.
  • The ability to work as part of a team but also using own initiative to take command of situations effectively, efficiently, and calmly.
  • Must be able to demonstrate good decisionmaking skills.
  • Ability to work a shift pattern and be flexible with regards to working duties and hours.

Ideal

  • V103 qualification, COC (Deck) / MOD equivalent, or willingness to gain V10
  • Knowledge of Harbour regulations
  • Knowledge of berthing operations
  • Knowledge of manual handling
  • Awareness of port security and the environment
  • Good working knowledge of the Central and Eastern Solent, as well as Southampton Water.
