Environmental Crime in the Community is something that we must all work together on to reduce.

The role of an Environmental Enforcement Officer will see you undertaking a range of different activities within the local community to address this problem.

District Enforcement work in partnership with Local Authorities and we are currently supporting Bedford Borough Council. We are now looking for outstanding individuals to work with our team of Enforcement officers.

Locality

Bedford is 46 miles (74 km) miles north-northwest of London, 65 miles (105 km) southeast of Birmingham, 25 miles (40 km) west of Cambridge and 19 miles (31 km) east-southeast of Northampton.

The town of Kempston is adjacent to Bedford, as are the villages of Elstow, Renhold and Ravensden. Wixams is a new town which is being developed to the south of Bedford.

Villages in the Borough of Bedford with populations of more than 2,000 as of 2005 were Biddenham, Bromham, Clapham, Elstow, Oakley, Sharnbrook, Shortstown, Wilstead, and Wootton.

There are also many smaller villages in the borough.

The villages in the borough are popular with commuters to Bedford, and also with people who commute to Milton Keynes, London and towns in Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire.

About You

Ideally, we are looking for a person who is highly self-motivated and holds the right skill sets and behaviours, to work independently, whilst supporting their colleagues and working as part of a team to deliver an outstanding service within the community.

Officers are given designated powers and will carry out foot patrol across the Borough.

In the case of witnessing an offence such as littering or dog fouling, you will be required to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice to the offender, whilst offering advice and providing information which will hopefully result in long-term behavioural changes amongst individuals.

Could this be you?

  • Do you care about the community where you live?
  • Do you consistently act with conscience and integrity?
  • Are you willing to build and work with a team to achieve excellence whilst acting as ambassadors to Bedford Borough Council?
  • Are you passionate about the Environment and want to make a real difference?
  • Are you able to engage with people, and do you hold great communication skills?
  • Do you enjoy working as part of a team?
  • Do you have basic IT skills and are able to use technology/smart phones?
  • Are you looking for a career change?
  • Are you looking for a steppingstone to gain experience before progressing into a Local Government or Law enforcement role?
  • Do you think you have what it takes to stand up to those who break the law?
  • Do you hold a full UK Driving Licence?

If so, we provide great training, working alongside experienced officers, which will compliment your existing skills to make you an excellent enforcement officer.

We are also looking for full-time positions, to fit with the core needs of the business. Full-time positions will cover 40 hours per week, with a rolling rota in place to assist on weekend working. Further details will be provided at interview.

This is a very interesting and challenging role, and tackling Environmental Crime does make a difference.

As representatives of both the Company and the Local Authority, you will need to be highly self-motivated and should have a GCSE in Mathematics and English (or equivalent NVQ - key skills).

You must be able to carry out foot patrol for the major part of your daily shift and be able to patrol in all weather conditions.

Law enforcement or similar experience useful but not essential as full training will be provided.
