Using a range of age appropriate engagement tool kits through words and pictures the practitioner will advocate and represent the child's view of their lived experience.

Under the delegated responsibility of the safeguarding nurse the engagement work will directly inform and contribute to the current safeguarding risk assessment.

The Child Lived Experience practitioner will undertake a trauma informed care approach as part of a safeguarding skill mix team.


Working with children who have experienced adversity the Lived Experience Practitioner will support the empowerment of the child to be both seen and heard, identify their strengths, resilience and clarify the child's view on what makes them feel safe, and who makes them feels safe.


Work undertaken by the Lived Experience Practitioner will directly contribute to specialist referrals, child protection conference reports, Child in Care Reviews and Multi-Agency Strategy meetings.


  • The practitioner will utilise highly developed communication skills to engage with children and young people to enable them to express their views of their lived experience.
  • Use interactive tools and techniques to engage in communication with children. Actively seek and promote the voice of the child with family members and professionals to support shared understanding of their lived experience and current difficulties.
  • Recognise and understand how the impact of adversity and trauma may be influencing current behaviour, distress or difficulties. Identify the safety needs of people affected by adversity/trauma (and their dependents) at the earliest possible opportunity so that
they can be protected from further harm.

  • Consideration to be given to the role our service can play in the reduction of risks from all forms of exploitation and sexually harmful behaviours.
  • Recognise, optimise, and support the development of individual strengths, skills and resources to support natural recovery following adversity/trauma.
  • Establish a consistent and respectful working relationship to set the conditions for safe disclosure of current or past trauma and abuse.
Support children affected by trauma to engage in and maintain safe, sustaining, and supportive relationships and social networks.

Working within a safeguarding skill mix team you will be working directly with child in both their home environment and in other settings where the child feels comfortable to talk.


Using your knowledge and skills in trauma informed care the children you will be working with have all come to the attention of multi-agency partners ( health, children's social care, and the police).

Your work will directly inform the health needs assessment as you work alongside a Safeguarding Nurse.


Working with a safeguarding nurse you will meet with the child and enable them to express their views in words and pictures, supporting the child and young person to express their wishes and feelings, utilising a range of accessible communication tools, your main responsibility is to document how safeguarding concerns have impacted upon their health and wellbeing.
