    Job summary

    The Clinical Haematology Department at NMUH offers care for the whole range of haematological conditions, with the exception of haemophilia, intensive treatment of acute leukaemia and bone marrow transplantation. It is a specialist centre for red cell disorders.

    Our services are based around:

    An average of 10 inpatients under the care of the team at any one time

    Podium 1 is a ward shared with oncology and HIV services, including dedicated single rooms with en-suite facilities. This is staffed by appropriate number of chemotherapy trained nurses and supported by the Haematology CNSs.

    Tower 4 (T4) is currently shared with Care of the Elderly and has 10 beds assigned to non-malignant haematology. These beds will move to the new Red Cell Unit in Pymmes -1 in due course

    3 haematology day case units

    o Red Cell Day Unit for haemoglobinopathy patients receiving blood transfusions and other booked day care procedures, including automated exchange transfusions

    o Sickle Cell Day Unit at the George Marsh Centre. A nurse led unit offering pain relief for a sub-group of frequently presenting patients with sickle cell disease.

    o Chemotherapy Day Unit shared with oncology where chemotherapy is given, venesections, bone marrows and other procedures are undertaken.

    Main duties of the job

    We are looking to appoint 2 x Trust Grade Doctor in Haematology (ST1-2 Equivalent) starting as soon as possible.

    This is an exciting post for a clinician who is interested in a career in Haematology. The department has an excellent track record of our trainees successfully applying to Haematology specialty training.

    This post is not a formally approved training post, but the postholder will join a busy and supportive department, have consultant-led education and supervision and will be supported in their professional development.

    The postholder is encouraged to attend clinics, MDTs and educational activities.

    The postholder will have the opportunity to develop quality improvement and audit projects during their placement. The department will provide mentorship and assistance in applications for Haematology as a career.

    Applicants must hold full GMC registration and should possess the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, have good interpersonal skills, and have a caring attitude towards patients and evidence of good clinical practice. The postholder will be expected to participate in the specialty on-call rota covering oncology and Haematology currently 1 in 7 long days.

    Job responsibilities

    Under the direction of the Consultant Haematologists, the SHO will be involved in the clinical work of the Department. The post would be ideal for those wishing to pursue a career in Haematology or wishing to gain more experience as we offer a broad range of haematology experience including haemato-oncology, red cell and haemoglobinopathies, thrombophilia and anticoagulation, obstetric and paediatric haematology.

    This is an ongoing post offered for 12-month full time in Haematology in the first instance. The postholder will provide support to the CT grade doctors in providing excellent care for in patients. There will be appropriate senior supervision

    Clinical responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with CT grade and Registrar colleagues to support the haematology service and to provide excellent inpatient care of haematology patients.
  • Review of Day unit patients across the three haematology Day units as required and arrange appropriate investigations; ensure all treatments administered as prescribed, keeping accurate documentation.
  • Arrange ward admission of patients as necessary, including acute haematology admissions via A&E; liaise with the registrar appropriately and escalate if necessary. Review of patients with the Consultant
  • Work alongside the CNS team to ensure continuity of care for patients.
  • Attendance in outpatient clinics with consultant supervision, particularly useful if pursuing a career in Haematology.
  • On call duties will be on the SHO rota with appropriate Consultant supervision (currently 1 weekend and 2 weekdays per month)

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration and license to practice
  • NHS experience

  • Evidence of completion of foundation competencies
  • Working towards MRCP or equivalent
  • Knowledge & Experience

  • Potential to benefit from the training available fits with career aspirations
  • Understands the basic principles of research
  • Attendance at emergency and resuscitation courses eg. ALS
  • Desirable

  • FY2 level experience, or higher, within the NHS
  • Experience in management of cancer patients
  • Knowledge of UK health systems and practices including the relationship between primary and secondary care and inter professional relationships
  • Knowledge of current issues in the NHS
  • Experience of clinical teaching
