Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic Medical PA to join our Vascular Department at Colchester Hospital for 30 hours per week, fixed term until December 2023.


In this post you will provide efficient and pro-active secretarial and administrative support to the consultants and other team members.

You will be the first point of contact for patients and will deal with a range of queries. You will work as part of our administrative team in supporting and covering other colleagues in the department.

Please note the salary quoted is pro rata. Internal applicants currently employed by ESNEFT will be offered on a secondment basis only. Please ensure you have spoken with your manager regarding a secondment.


In this role you will be responsible for carrying out medical secretarial administrative duties, adhering to policies and procedures to provide a comprehensive high quality service, and to be able to deal efficiently and courteously with patient and staff enquiries.

You will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to prioritise and adapt to constant demands on the workload as well as be able to demonstrate the ability to work as a team member.

Relevant experience within an administration team is essential.


Skills required for the post include: good typing and audio skills, the ability to prioritise tasks, effective time management skills, good IT and secretarial skills, PTL validation, good communication, interpersonal and organisation skills, and a good team member.

  • Audio typing of outpatient clinic letters using the digital dictation system and reports using Microsoft Word within agreed timescale. In the absence of the Consultant, ensuring these letters are sent out, to reach the correct destination within agreed standard. Typing of medical reports.
  • Dealing with incoming telephone calls from patients/relatives/GP surgeries/other departments within the Hospital/outside organisations, independently dealing with or passing on queries/messages to the Consultant and other staff.
  • Liaise with booking clerks to ensure that patients are added to the waiting list within agreed standards and undertake administration of patients on the waiting list as and when required.
  • Preparing presentations as requested by the Consultant if/and when necessary.
