We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Discretionary Funds Officer (Maternity Cover) to join our small dynamic Financial Assistance Fund team.


The Financial Assistance Fund team seeks to enable students, through financial and other support to achieve success at the University.

Reporting to the Financial Assistance Fund Manager and working with the existing Discretionary Funds Officer, the post holder will be responsible for the administration of the hardship funds and appropriate trust funds for students.

The team is part of the wider Education Development Service, which offers staff and student development services across the University.

As part of the wider team, the post holder will have the opportunity to engage with staff and students across the University.


This is a maternity cover post for a period of up to 12 months.


The post holder will be expected to work on campus three days a week based at our city centre campus.


Main responsibilities

  • Coordinate, monitor and control financial processes and records relating to the funds, providing regular reporting and reconciliation.
  • Liaise with University financial management to prepare for both internal and external audits.
  • Prepare accurate reports and returns for internal and external audits, funding bodies, relevant university committees, and senior management of the department and the University.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of policies, issues, and legislation relating to student funding and hardship funds.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to the assessment and administration of funds.

Essentials

  • Educated to A Level or equivalent standard.
  • Experience in using electronic financial systems.
  • Evidence of continued professional development in operating spreadsheets and financial systems, or policies and procedure relating to student financial issues.
  • Ability to work proactively and enthusiastically without detailed supervision.
  • Ability to balance and prioritise conflicting pressures and demands and to meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentational skills.
  • Ability to analyse data and use the results of the analysis to produce reports.
  • Strong financial literacy.
  • Excellent organisational skills.


Previous experience of hardship funds assessment or co-ordination, and knowledge of student finance policies and procedures, and welfare benefits is desirable.
