JAC Job Description – Selection Exercise Manager - HEO

Are you skilled in juggling multiple priorities and the needs of a variety of stakeholders? Excited by the opportunity to manage and deliver your own projects from beginning to end? Passionate about playing your part in helping to recruit the judges of tomorrow? If the answer is yes, you could be exactly who we're looking for to join our dynamic operational team.

    The Role

We're looking for two Selection Exercise Managers to help us deliver high quality recruitment campaigns at pace. As an independent public body, the Judicial Appointments Commission is responsible for designing, planning, and running recruitment campaigns to select judges in the courts and tribunals, up to and including the High Court, as well as non-legal tribunal members. You can read more about our work on our website:
With a new recruitment campaign launched every couple of weeks, and statutory responsibilities to make sure we select candidates on merit and through fair and open competition, it's essential that our processes are robust, inclusive, and attractive to candidates from the widest possible backgrounds.
Our Selection Exercise Managers are at the very heart of this activity. They scope and plan our selection exercise timetables, work with judges and panel members to develop recruitment materials that are fair and robust, and deliver a busy programme of shortlisting and interview activity designed to ensure we find the best candidates for judicial and tribunal posts.
It's an exciting, fast-paced, and operational role, which requires excellent multi-tasking, strong project management, clear communication, and the ability to work at pace while maintaining excellent attention to detail. We're particularly interested in applicants who have worked in operational delivery roles, or environments with relevant transferrable experience.

    Main responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Selection Exercise Manager, the Selection Exercise Manager will be responsible for:

    • Planning, running, and managing selection exercises to attract and select suitable candidates for judicial office.

    • Accurately collecting and reporting on statistical information throughout the selection exercise process.

    • Liaising with our stakeholders, including acting as the first points of contact for selection panel members, civil servants, and judges.

    • Producing reports on progress and making recommendations at key stages of the exercise to the Commission Board.

    • Overseeing the arranging of candidate interviews, briefing the selection panel members, observing panels etc.

    • Managing and delegating tasks to Selection Exercise Officers, where necessary.

The duties/responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present and is not intended to be exhaustive. The job holder is expected to accept reasonable alterations and additional tasks of a similar level that may be necessary.

    • Strong project management skills

    • Excellent organisational skills including the ability to prioritise effectively, deliver on time and provide high quality customer service.

    • A good understanding of how to manage and run competing tasks.

    • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.

    • Excellent attention to detail in drafting, planning and delivery.

    • The ability to quickly learn to use unfamiliar software to a good standard, with appropriate training.

    • Experience of working in an operational delivery role (or relevant transferrable experience)

    What we can offer you

We offer a range of benefits including an attractive annual leave allowance, flexible and hybrid working opportunities, and choice of pension schemes. We actively encourage all staff to undertake learning and development as part of their personal objectives.

While the JAC is an independent executive non-departmental public body, we are considered an arms-length body of the Ministry of Justice and share many of the same policies, processes and terms and conditions as Civil Servants employed directly by the MoJ. This includes being part of the MoJ pay remit, enabling transferees from other government departments to retain their continuity of service and Civil Service Pension arrangements.
