    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Lung Cancer nurse to join the nurse specialist service as a band 6 clinical nurse specialist.

    The role involves supporting and working alongside the existing team of the Clinical Nurse Specialists and working closely with the multidisciplinary team in providing support to Lung Cancer patients throughout their diagnostic and/or palliative pathway.

    This will involve clinical sessions including, but not limited to:

  • Nurse led clinics
  • Nurse led care - working alongside lung cancer clinicians
  • Telephone consultations with patients/carers
  • Managing own caseload
  • Advising other members of the multidisciplinary care on specific care matters (face to face, telephone, email or letter)
  • MDT meetings
  • Handling patient complaints
  • Involvement in audit, research

    Main duties of the job

    The successful candidate will form part of the Lung Cancer nurse team and be responsible for reviewing/assessing patients, who will be a mix of acutely unwell and elective pathway and for their ongoing management. The CNS will be required at times to work autonomously in managing their own caseload of patients from pre-diagnosis through to palliative care, working closely with senior medical and nursing staff. This will progress to involvement in reviewing patients in clinic.

    To liaise with all key members of the multidisciplinary team to advise and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient care across professional boundaries.

    To undertake nurse led clinics and various nurse led services, ensuring excellent standards of nursing care to patients through the planning, co-ordinating, delivery and evaluation of clinics.

    To work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient group and service based on principles that are research based and which enhance the quality of patient care.

    Job responsibilities

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. The post holder will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
  • A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
  • Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of symptoms, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited.
  • Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures
  • Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
  • Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
