Approximately cardiac Operations and thoracic procedures are undertaken annually at the unit with exposure to all aspects of adult cardiac and thoracic surgical practice.

Cardiac Surgical Unit has close collaboration with the all the allied speciality (especially interventional cardiology) and has very active TAVI programme as well as mínimally invasive cardiac & thoracic surgical programmes.

The unit has strong links with Swansea University and Swansea medical school. There are active academic links and juniors in the past have undertaken research projects leading to higher degrees.

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for individuals to be part of the Cardiothoracic Team.

Though, the posts are not formally recognised for training, but the experience will be comparable to that of the trainees.

The post holders will access to whole spectrum of clinical work including ward based duties as well as operative experience in the theatre with supervised operating.

Participation in educational programmes and assessment as well as audit and research will be encouraged and fully supported.


Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people.

We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science.

The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services:
Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.


The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University.

Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of South West Wales.

Swansea is Wales' second-largest city, and sits on the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay. An ideal base for exploring South-West Wales, there is also much on offer for visitors in Swansea itself.

Swansea has a range of shops, cozy cafes, great restaurants, art galleries as well as being able to offer good outdoor lifestyle with its beautiful coastline and beaches on the Gower Peninsula.

Swansea also has excellent sporting facilities including the Wales National pool and liberty stadium home to the Ospreys and Swansea City football club.


The posts would be ideal for an ambitious doctor looking to gain further experience in cardiothoracic surgery in preparation for a future career in cardiothoracic surgery or related allied speciality.


The SBU Cardiothoracic Unit has excellent clinical facilities with a 25 bedded ward, 8 bedded Level 2 HDU unit and a 12 bedded Level 3 Cardiac Unit Care Unit that has undergone major investment and refurbishment in 2016.
