    Our special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) team is looking for someone to join them as a Mediations Coordinator. The successful candidate will oversee the Mediations, Appeals and Tribunals processes for children and young people with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan.

    As a Mediations Coordinator you will work in a small team to solve complex problems to ensure that children and young people have provision and placement which meets their identified needs, whilst adhering to the legal processes. You will work across schools, colleges, as well as alongside health and social care teams to achieve this. Your role is to champion the child or young person and work in a co-produced and restorative manner.

    Experience of working with children and young people with a range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families, and a good working knowledge of current and emerging SEND-related legislation and legal processes as well as the SEND Code of Practice will be essential. A key task will be to ensure that for every child and young person on your caseload, the legal processes are followed to a successful resolution.

    The post-holder will need to be able to work under pressure, to meet deadlines and to identify priorities when faced with competing demands. Excellent verbal and written communication skills will be essential, as will the ability to build and maintain strong and positive working relationships with families, schools and a range of other professionals.

    This position is for a fixed term of 12 months from the start date.

    This post meets the requirements for an Enhanced Criminal Record Check. This will show spent and unspent convictions and adult cautions which have not been filtered in line with legislation, plus any information held by local Police that is considered relevant to the role.

    Skills

    Essential:
    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • A high level of written and oral communication skills.
    • Significant decision making skills – the ability to analyse information, draw conclusions and effect judgements based on outcomes and risk.
    • Proven problem solving skills – the ability to identify causes, make objective and informed judgements that demonstrates emotional resilience and balance.
    • Ability to deal with difficult and challenging situations with tact and sensitivity.
    As this post meets the requirements of the Immigration Act 2016 (part 7), the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

    Knowledge

    Essential:
    • A thorough understanding of current legislation and DfE guidance and developments in special educational needs.
    • A broad understanding of issues surrounding general developments in educational assessment and intervention.
    • Knowledge of legislation and procedures relating to assessment and provision for children with special educational needs.
    • An understanding of the implications of the emerging changes to legislation relating to special educational needs.

    Experience & Qualifications

    Essential:
    • Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) with English (A-C).
    • Experience of working in schools.
    • Significant experience of work in relation to young people and children with special educational needs.
    • Experience of effective working with parents and carers.
    • Experience of working to deadlines and making robust evidenced informed decisions.
