    Do you have a keen interest inand passion for supporting families to feed their baby their way, supportingbreastfeeding and infant nutrition?

    Nottingham CityCarePartnership Childrens Public Health 0-19 Nursing Service are looking forNutrition Peer Support Workers to work across Nottingham City.

    We are looking for people, whohave personal experience of breastfeeding, to join our teams of HealthVisitors, School Nurses, Family Nurses and support staff working in a thinkfamily way, working together to support families to feed their baby their waywhile enjoying healthier lifestyles.

    As part of the team, you will besupporting women and their families with their preferred baby feeding choices,promoting, and supporting breast feeding through telephone contacts, homevisits and breastfeeding groups. You will support them on their journey from beforethe baby is born, in the first few days after the baby is born, throughintroducing first foods and balancing milk and meals so that by their firstbirthday the baby is moving towards having 3 healthy meals and snacks a day.

    We serve a very diversepopulation, it would be beneficial if you speak another language.

    The Childrens Public Health 0-19 Nursing Service teamsdeliver Public Health interventions as part of the A Better Start serviceacross Nottingham City (formally known as Health Visiting and School NursingServices).

    Main duties of the job

    You will work across Nottingham City as part of ageographically based skill mix team that delivers Childrens 0-19 Public HealthNursing Services supporting the delivery of nutrition focused interventionsincluding diet and physical exercise health promotion and the Healthy ChildProgramme to children and families.

    Your rolewill be to engage with pregnant and postnatal women, and their partners, intheir homes, by telephone and in virtual/face to face clinics and groups in thecommunity. You will support them to responsively feed their babies their way(breast milk or combination) and support with healthy lifestyle choicesregarding diet, nutrition, and physical exercise.

    Your focusis breastfeeding support encouraging and supporting healthy nutrition in the antenatalcontact and first six weeks of the postnatal period with an emphasis on thosewho are less likely to initiate or maintain breastfeeding.

    Your practice must adhere to clinicalguidelines, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) both on a localand national level and you must demonstrate Nottingham CityCare Partnership CICvalues and behaviours in all you do.

    Job Purpose

  • To work across Nottingham City as part of a geographically based skill mix team that delivers Childrens 0-19 Public Health Nursing Services supporting the delivery of nutrition focused interventions including diet and physical exercise health promotion and the Healthy Child Programme to children and families.
  • Your role will be to engage with pregnant and postnatal women, and their partners, in their homes, by telephone and in virtual/face to face clinics and groups in the community. You will support them to responsively feed their babies their way (breast milk or combination) and support with healthy lifestyle choices regarding diet, nutrition, and physical exercise.
  • Your focus is breastfeeding support encouraging and supporting healthy nutrition in the antenatal contact and first six weeks of the postnatal period with an emphasis on those who are less likely to initiate or maintain breastfeeding.

  • To work under the direction and leadership of a Clinical Service Lead/Specialist Community Public Health Nurses and other team members and be integral to the 0-19 Childrens Public Health Nursing Service.
  • You will support the delivery of high-quality services to children and their families in Nottingham as part of the Giving Nottingham Children the Best Start In Life contract.
  • You are expected work in a cost-effective way ensuring responsible use of public funds.
  • You will undertake mandatory, and role specific training as required.
  • You will participate in management, safeguarding supervision and annual appraisal.
  • The core service hours are to 5pm, Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.
  • Key Responsibilities

    Quality and performance

  • Undertake Healthy Child Programme infant and maternal nutrition and breastfeeding public health interventions delegated by the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN).
  • Provide nutrition peer support to pregnant and postnatal women, working within local, national and UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative guidance to support improved infant nutrition outcomes.
  • Advise on the appropriate use of Vitamin D for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and babies.
  • Promote Healthy Start

  • Coordinate and deliver the contact with new mother to offer breastfeeding support in the initial post-natal period, within commissioned timescales, over the telephone or face to face.
  • Plan, in partnership with the SCPHN/Public Health Nutrition Lead, facilitate and deliver breastfeeding and infant nutrition groups (First Foods, Healthy Lifestyles, Milk to Meals) and clinics.
  • Plan, in partnership with the SCPHN/Public Health Nutrition Lead, breastfeeding and healthy lifestyle nutrition health promotion initiatives in a variety of settings displays and health promotion focused events.
  • Undertake breast feeding assessments to support maternal confidence in successful breast feeding. Where concerns are identified escalate to SCPHN for additional assessment and intervention.
  • Contribute to the promotion and uptake of enhanced offers to children and families imagination library.
  • Support the team with clinical processes , ensuring that rooms are set up for groups/clinics, that equipment is clean, that health promotion literature is available and health promotion displays are up to date.
  • To be flexible as required in supporting service delivery across the whole City.
  • Signpost clients to additional ratified support and resources , Feed Your Way, Specialist Infant Feeding Clinic.
  • To maintain contemporaneous healthcare records using SystmOne in line with National and Nottingham CityCares policies and procedures.
  • Work using own initiative within the limitations of the role; always promoting high quality care and Nottingham CityCares values and behaviours.
  • Participate in breast feeding incentives as required.
  • Undertake any other duties which may be reasonably required within the remit of the role.

  • Share learnt and experiential knowledge to support mothers to breastfeed.
  • Supervise and support breastfeeding peer support volunteers.
  • Support the team and organisation to provide a learning environment and experience for new staff and students.
  • Work in accordance with Nottingham City Local Safeguarding Childrens Board procedures.
  • Provide and receive routine information, orally, in writing or electronically in line with Nottingham CityCare policy and abiding by legal requirements.
  • Complete all appropriate records/documents in a clear, accurate and timely way, participating in reporting processes and audit processes as necessary.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own workload under the supervision of senior members of the team.
  • Demonstrate empathy, compassion, and ability to reassure.
  • Be sensitive to the needs of service users who may have communication problems and implement to accessible information standard. Where English is not the first language or understanding is limited, identify appropriate resources to optimise understanding for parents and young people.

  • Maintain an accurate electronic diary in accordance with lone working policy and adhere to mobile working guidance.

  • To attend mandatory and essential and role specific training sessions as defined by Nottingham CityCare Partnership.
  • To have an understanding of CityCare policies and procedures related to your clinical role.
  • To attend safeguarding supervision on a regular basis in accordance with Nottingham CityCare Partnership guidelines.
  • To receive annual review and personal development planning to promote achievement of individual, team and organisational objectives.
  • Complete a comprehensive competency package through observation, reflection and supervised practice within the first 6 months of being in post.

    Knowledge and Skills

    Essential

  • An ability to plan and organise own workload and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to support and supervise volunteer workers.
  • Evidence of understanding of confidential and sensitive issues including GDPR and data protection legislation.
  • A good standard of written and spoken English
  • An ability to interpret and work within the parameters of standard operating procedures, care pathways and other policies and procedures
  • An ability to use Microsoft Office programmes, including MS Outlook and MS Word

  • Awareness of local and national childrens public health agendas
  • Previous knowledge of SystmOne and use of health care records
  • An understanding of the Healthy Child Programme (DH 2009)
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of child protection and safeguarding procedures

  • Educated to NVQ Level 3, or equivalent in a healthcare / childcare related area or able to demonstrate significant relevant previous experience.
  • Good basic numeracy and literacy to GCSE level (A-C or 9-4) or equivalent.
