    We have an exciting opportunity for a highly innovative and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to work in the Camden with pre-school children. The post holder will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive and highly specialist therapy service to children with complex needs in Camden. This service provides input for children 0-18yrs within Camden MOSAIC which includes the Child Development Team, Feeding Clinic and the Camden Community Dysphagia Outreach team.

    The post holder will have specialist knowledge in the multi-disciplinary approach to the assessment, diagnosis and therapy with effective communication outcomes for children and young people with complex needs (autism, intellectual disability and physical needs). In addition, the post holder will be knowledgeable and have experience in assessing, treating and managing children and young people who have eating and drinking difficulties including dysphagia.

    The post is for 0.8 WTE although full time work can be considered please phone manager to discuss further. Based in Camden; an inner-London borough which is vibrant and diverse. You will be working alongside a range of professionals including Dieticians, Paediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Family Support Workers and Health Visiting.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    The post holder is responsible for delivering a comprehensive and specialist therapy service to children with complex needs in Camden. The service provides input for children 0-5yrs within Camden MOSAIC (Child Development Team).

    The post holder has specialist knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis and therapy with effective communication outcomes for children and young people with complex needs. In addition, the post holder is knowledgeable and experienced in assessing, treating and managing children and young people who eating and drinking difficulties including dysphagia.

    The post holder is responsible for organising and managing their own caseload and in building and maintaining strong relationships with preschool settings and the special school network in Camden. They will also take the lead in supporting junior therapists, and helping them to make decisions about prioritisation.

    The post holder will be responsible for promoting effective communication skills between children and their families within the home environment and in nursery and school. They will support speech and language therapy colleagues, parents and other professionals within schools and nurseries, by independently planning and providing appropriate training.

    The post holder is responsible for inducting, supervising, supporting and directing more junior SLTs as well as training students. They take on deputised duties from the Clinical Coordinator for Camden MOSAIC as required.

    The post holder will work within a multi-agency environment, and as part of a multidisciplinary team that may include therapy assistant, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, paediatricians, dieticians, keyworkers/family support workers and psychologists, as well as outside agencies such as school staff (at all levels), Camden KIDS, Camden Early Years Intervention Team and Camden SEN department.

    The post holder will have excellent communication skills enabling them to overcome communication barriers, displaying an awareness and sensitivity to social, cultural and economic issues. In particular they will need to be skilled in presenting complex information to parents/families and young people themselves in a way they are able to understand. The post holder will need the ability to empathise in order to support and counselparents/carers and children to accept the implications of presenting communication difficulties and/or feeding difficulties.

    The post holder will support parents and teaching staff to enable children and young people to access support in their learning environment. This may involve training and modelling of strategies to parents and professionals working with the child/young person. The post holder will be able to plan and provide a range of appropriate, evidence-based packages of care through individual and small group therapy as required.

    The post holder will have knowledge of the early years foundation and will devise and provide individualised therapy targets which are dovetailed with the educational curriculum and be able to practice clinical decision making to ensure that EHCP targets are functional, relevant and feasible.
