    Department overview

    The Communications Directorate is responsible for managing and developing the Bank's external and internal communications. We manage the relationships with key stakeholder groups including the media, Parliament, technical stakeholders and the general public. We also develop and maintain our external website and social media presence, produce flagship publications, and ensure the Bank meets its statutory obligations regarding the Freedom of Information Act.

    The Public and Stakeholder Engagement team is part of the Media and Stakeholder Relations division within the Communications directorate. It operates a number of functions to enable the Bank to engage with a broad range of stakeholders. This includes running outreach events, delivering an education programme, operating a public enquiries service, and the Bank of England Museum.

    The Bank of England Museum represents both the Bank's history and our work today. It plays a key role in helping to promote understanding of the Bank's role and the wider economy, alongside global economic history. The Museum welcomes a broad range of visitors every year and our exhibitions and events programme is crafted to provide content that reflects visitor interests and needs.

    Job description

    The Bank of England's historical collection contains around 80,000 items, ranging from banknotes, fine art, archaeology, coins, social history, and industrial items. Alongside the core collection, there is a supporting working collection of artwork and furniture. The collection tells the story of the history of the Bank of England and its role in the UK economy.

    The jobholder will be responsible for all aspects of managing the collection, including specifically:
    • Collections Care
      • Organising conservation with external conservators as required.
      • Undertaking preventative conservation work as required.
      • Undertaking object rehousing work as required.
      • Point of contact for any working collection-based issues.
      • Monitoring the environmental programme and IPM.
    • Collections information
      • Cataloguing the collection, focusing on increasing the information that is held and data cleaning.
      • Development of the Axiell Collections database, including the development of thesaurus terminology and terminology hierarchies.
      • Point of contact for the database with both internal and external staff. This includes working with vendors on any patches or updates to the database.
      • Undertaking any audit requirements as outlined by Internal Audit.
    • Collections access
      • Act as registrar on loans in and out of the Museum. This includes contract negotiation with lenders, borrowers and internal teams. Acting as a courier and overseeing installation of objects as required.
      • Monitoring the group inbox, answering enquiries from externals and internals.
      • Providing image licences for material held in the collection.
      • Organising photography of the collections or creating reproductions of items as required.
      • Support Collections Use requests, including organisation of packing, transport and insurance, as outlined in the Collections Access policy.
      • Assisting in the creation of content for blogs, social media, internal posts or any other relevant content requested by the Digital Engagement Officer.
    • Collections Development
      • Act as a registrar on acquisitions, including working through the unaccessioned backlog of material. This involves working on purchases, donations and internal transfers from departments.
      • Act as registrar on any disposals from the museum collection, including potential future rationalisation projects.
      • Development and implementation of all Collections Management policies and procedures.
    • Exhibitions/other
      • Support the Curator and Exhibitions Manager in the development and installation of exhibitions and displays.
      • Support the Exhibitions Manager with the maintenance of the Museum and permanent displays/galleries.
      • Support other Museum team members across a range of duties, including front of house, as required.
    Role requirements
    • Minimum criteria
      • Significant experience of working in Collections Management in a museum.
      • Knowledge and practical experience of Collections Care activities (cleaning, rehousing).
      • Practical experience of moving historic collections (social history and art hanging), including working at height.
      • Knowledge of RAMS, H&S best practices and working with hazardous collections.
      • Knowledge of Registrar best practice (UKRG standards or otherwise).
      • Experience of object handling, including installation for display.
      • Good communication skills and experience of managing cross-departmental relationships.
    • Desirable criteria
      • Knowledge of photoshop or experience of editing photography.
      • Practical experience of exhibition installations and deinstallations.
      • Experience of working in a public-facing role within a cultural institution.
      • Interest in financial history.
    The jobholder will be part of a small team involved in the day-to-day running of the Museum. As such they will be expected to work flexibly and be willing to support other team members across a range of duties. This will include a small number of regular front-of-house shifts.

    Due to the operational nature of this role it is based on-site. We also advise that the role can at times involve some physical duties, such as moving large objects.

    Salary and Benefits Information

    We encourage flexible working, part time working and job share arrangements. Part time salary and benefits will be on a pro-rated basis as appropriate.

    This specific role offers a base salary of £28,320 - £31,860 (FTE) per annum (dependent on skills and experience) along with our comprehensive benefits package as follows:
    • A non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/95th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/50th) or decrease (to 1/120th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year.
    • A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
    • A 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits.
    • 26 days' annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits.
    • Private medical insurance and income protection.
    National Security Vetting Process

    Employment in this role will be subject to the National Security Vetting clearance process (and typically can take between 6 to 12 weeks post offer) and the passing of additional Bank security checks in accordance with the Bank policy.
