    Job summary

    The role of the Lead Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in North Bristol Trust Emergency Department will be to take strategic leadership responsibility for ensuring the delivery of person-centred, safe and effective patient care by ACPs. They will provide direction and guidance on clinical practice and development for Credentialed ACPs and Trainee ACPs (tACPs) by establishing effective clinical supervision, educational supervision, managerial support, and associated governance arrangements. They will be responsible for developing new policies and implement best practice so that our highly skilled ACP workforce continues to develop and work effectively to meet the needs of the patients in North Bristol Trust's Emergency Department.

    Main duties of the job

    Managerial

  • Ensure robust supervision arrangements are in place for all ACPs and tACP within NBTED.
  • Ensure support for the Lead Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP), and the ENP team generally.
  • Undertake professional development planning with ACPs and tACPs to identify opportunities for growth and development
  • Ensure annual appraisal and revalidation arrangements are in place for all ACPs and ensure a training board is provided for tACPs.
  • Lead and support in recruitment of new ACPs, tACPs and ENPs in conjunction with the Lead ENP
  • Supervise and support tACP including arranging clinical training programmes.

    Strategic

  • Provide professional leadership for the strategic direction of all ACP and tACP activity within the Emergency Department. This includes: Service development and redesign,Workforce planning,Innovative role development,Recruitment and retention,Training and development
  • Professional supervision and development to underpin the provision of sustainable high quality services.
  • Develop a post credentialled training programme in ensure career progression for our credentialled ACPs
  • Education

  • Work in partnership with higher and further education institutes, University of the West of England (UWE), Health Education England, the Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS England to ensure delivery of educational programmes which meet the requirements and will create a workforce that is responsive to the needs of patients and the organisation now and for the future. To represent North Bristol NHS Trust in Tripartite meetings between NBT and UWE.
  • To lead or work in conjunction with a delegated lead for the North Bristol Trust ACP Community of Practice.
  • Leadership

  • Identify and implement evidence based best practice, sharing this internally and
  • externally to meet and exceed national guidelines and good practice statements.

  • Take responsibility for their own learning and performance including participating in clinical supervision and acting as a positive role model.
  • Actively promote the workplace as a learning environment, encouraging everyone to learn from each other and from external good practice
  • Support and contribute to the teaching of nursing and allied healthcare professional (AHP) staff, medical, nursing and physician associate students, junior doctors and administration staff as appropriate
  • Encourage others to make realistic self-assessment of their application of knowledge and skills, challenging any complacency or actions that are not in the interest of the public and/or users of services.
  • Represent TRFT at local and national meetings.
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, demonstrate leadership qualities and support with the day-to-day operation of the business as required.

  • Quality Improvement

  • Ensure the ACP team deliver care according to National Service Framework, NICE guidelines and evidence-based care.
  • Assess effectiveness of care delivery by the team through self and peer review, benchmarking and formal evaluation.
  • Lead and participate in the maintenance of quality governance systems and processes across the organisation and its activities.
  • Utilise the audit cycle as a means of evaluating the quality of the work of the team, implementing improvements where required.
  • In partnership with other clinical teams, collaborate on improving the quality of health care responding to local and national policies and initiatives as appropriate.
  • Support and participate in shared learning across the Trust and wider organisation
  • Actively participate in the Trust significant event procedures. Ensure learning and actions from significant event reviews are implemented and reviewed.
  • Assess the impact of policy implementation on care delivery
  • Clinical

  • Deliver and participate in high standards of clinical care delivered to patients in the Emergency Department
  • Ensure all aspects of practice are undertaken with obtained informed consent where applicable, in accordance with local policy, professional body guidance and law.
  • Be able to undertake advanced and comprehensive assessment based on a body of specialist knowledge.
  • Be directly responsible and manage patients as part of their own caseload.
  • Provide supervision and direction to junior members of the clinical and nursing teams.
  • Whilst working within the professional boundaries of an ACP, assess, examine, investigate, diagnose and treat patients resulting in the safe management, which may consist of further management, referral to another specialty or discharge.
  • Contribute and assist in safe and efficient patient flow and become involved in potential areas of improvement within this area.
  • Be directly involved in patient experience quality assessment and implementation of improvement strategies.
  • Critically assess patient care and plans and address any issues, which may result in substandard care.
  • Be familiar and implement trust and national policy, guidelines and recommendations to facilitate a standardised approach.
  • Ensure accurate and legible documentation and records are maintained in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
  • Practice in accordance with specific professional body codes of professional behaviour.
