    Exciting opportunity to work within a small team providing ear care with the outpatients department at Lincoln County Hospital & occasional at other sites.

    Initially a Band 5 role progressing to band 6 on completion of diploma training & competency's.

    The new post holder will be required to attend a 5-day diploma course in Rotherham in Aural care if they do not already have the relevant qualification.

    Aural Care Nurse is responsible for the total management of all patients over the age of 16yrs with ear problems that do not need an initial assessment by an ENT Doctor at all sites within ULHT.

    New Referrals are taken directly via choose and book from GP's, Nurse Practitioners, ENT Doctors, plus taking over existing caseload of patients.

    Main duties of the job

    Assess patient using patient attendance sheet, examine both ears using microscope, plan care/treatment and discuss with patient. Explain risks and side effects of any treatment, ask patient to sign consent form. Answer any questions Provide treatment as discussed- micro-suction, manual wax removal, based upon clinical knowledge and expertise and patient preference/requirement, advise re: condition, discuss any follow/up and after care. Complete outcome on patient kiosk. Refer to Ent doctors as required under clinical guidelines.

  • Evaluation of previous care given
  • Provide topical treatments as per PGD Guidelines to treat varying ear conditions bacterial/fungal infection, chronic otitis externa etc
  • Provide mastoid cavity care/treatments and advise
  • Provide education re; management of aural conditions chronic otitis externa (diffuse or localised), Eustachian tube dysfunction, middle ear effusion, management of perforated tympanic membrane etc
  • Dictation of GP letters after each patient on Digital Bighand
  • Clean down clinic, replace all used equipment ready for next user.
  • Ensure all outcomes are complete by checking patient kiosk
  • Liaise with ENT doctors regarding any problems encountered during clinic.
  • Liaise with Audiology Department should patients require any input from them.

    Management Skills

    Take responsibility for the delivery and evaluation of specialist aural care for patients with ENT disease

    Manage own caseload of patients.

    Assist in the development of strategies and policies for local service development

    Lead in the audit of service delivery and evaluate outcomes to improve service development

    Continually monitor own and staffs performance in the provision of care ensuring professional standards are met at all times

    Establish clear referral patterns, communicating and co-operating with all departments, wards and relevant professionals

    Develop strategies to ensure that the ENT service benefits all service users within agreed resources

    Establish and maintain effective communication with individuals and groups at all levels of the organisation, on complex potentially stressful topics in a range of situations.

    Develop and improve the strong links within the ENT multi-disciplinary team across the Trust

    Ensure patients and their relatives have enough information to enable the patient to make an informed choice

    Communicates very sensitive condition related information, utilising verbal and non-verbal methods, to patients and relatives ensuring they are supported effectively

    Develop and maintain links between the ENT nursing team across Trust

    Develop and maintain links for direct referrals to audiology

    Develop and maintain links between other multi-disciplinary teams

    Develop and maintain links between other professionals allied to medicine

    Develop and maintain links between secondary and primary health care teams

    Develop and maintain links between the private sector

    Develop and maintain an active working relationship with clinical effectiveness team

    Develop strategies and policies for the ENT service improvement

    Support the development, expansion and evaluation of nurse-led clinics for new and follow-up patients

    Responsible for initiating referrals and ordering investigations arising from the protocol of the nurse-led clinics

    Lead in the development ENT protocols, pathways and policies

    Share areas of best practice with peers across the Trust

    Enable people to exercise their rights and promote their equality and diver sity

    Treat all patients as an individual

    Assist patients and their relatives to form an informed choice with regards to their treatment and surgical options

    Offer the facilities to review patients at outreach clinics
