    B6 Rotational Physiotherapists Permanent

    37.5hours per week or part time considered

    The opportunity has arisen to grow and evolve our Physiotherapy service at West Suffolk Foundation Trust, Bury St Edmunds. We have exciting prospects for Band 6 Physiotherapy posts within the acute trust, community assessment beds, and community rotations.

    The Rotational posts would be suitable for someone seeking to develop their physiotherapy clinical and leadership skills at Band 6 level in a wide range of specialities. We would also welcome experienced band 5s looking to develop towards a band 6 role who will be fully supported by the therapies team.

    You will benefit from working in a busy NHS Trust offering rotational experience in the following: Medicine, Community, Virtual Ward, ITU/Respiratory, Community Respiratory, Paediatrics (including MSK clinics), Neurology/Stroke, Orthopaedics, and Early Intervention. Weekend working, evening clinics and emergency on-call working are integral to these rotations. Some of the rotations require seven-day rostering so you will need to be flexible to support this. Venues for delivering our services include outreach clinics, inpatient wards, patients' homes and community bases.

    Main duties of the job We will offer the successful candidates the opportunity to broaden their clinical practice in a variety of settings, whilst developing leadership skills and supporting physiotherapy students on placement. Promoting the role of physiotherapy within the Trust and more widely is an essential part of the role.

    Job summary:

    To provide a high standard of physiotherapy assessment and treatment of patients in a variety of inpatient, outpatient and community settings.

    To autonomously manage a sometimes complex clinical case load and undertake professional duties as a qualified senior physiotherapist, seeking advice where appropriate

    To maintain an active professional development portfolio and to continue with on-going post-graduate learning.

    To effectively communicate complex information in both clinical and non-clinical settings

    To assist in the development of junior staff

    Clinical

    To work as an autonomous clinical practitioner in both inpatient and outpatient settings, seeking advice and support from senior colleagues where necessary, i.e. with complex clinical issues and management/legal issues. To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for the management of patients in your care

    To apply comprehensive assessment skills and knowledge to diagnose and treat a variety of presentations, ranging in complexity, incorporating both analytical reasoning and manual assessment skills. To ensure safe and effective treatment by choosing appropriate therapies

    To communicate effectively with patients, carers and relatives to maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding of conditions. This requires a variety of communication skills including education, motivation and empathy. To adapt your approach in order to overcome barriers to effective communication, i.e. dysphasia, dementia, deafness, pain and fear
    • To employ professional judgement to establish a level of consent or work with in departmental policy to treat patients lacking the capacity to provide consent.
    • To liaise with the multidisciplinary team (doctors, allied health professionals and nursing staff, both internally and externally) regarding patient prognosis, treatment progression and discharge planning therefore ensuring a co-ordinated and holistic approach to patient care
    • To apply clinical reasoning skills to make daily decisions regarding the appropriateness of diagnostic and therapeutic management and prioritisation of caseload within the scope of practice and to effectively communicate complex clinical information with the multidisciplinary team, healthcare professionals and physiotherapy colleagues.
    • To formulate treatment programmes and rehabilitation goals in conjunction with patients from the initial assessment, using established knowledge, clinical reasoning and health coaching skills.
    • To be competent and confident in demonstrating and employing manual treatment techniques in a safe and reasoned manner such as when working in specialist areas such as ITU with acutely ill patients requiring invasive and accurate treatment.
    • To maintain accurate and comprehensive electronic patient records in accordance with professional guidelines, Trust and departmental standards. To communicate assessment and treatment results to appropriate disciplines whilst abiding by the protocol on confidentiality.
    • To be responsible for organising and planning daily caseloads for yourself and others to maximise service provision this includes overseeing junior physiotherapists, delegating tasks to assistant practitioners and rehabilitation assistants and supervising this delegated work, either directly or indirectly.
    • To be an active participant in the physiotherapy out of hours on call rota. This will involve being the sole practitioner to treat patients requiring emergency respiratory physiotherapy. To be confident and competent in treating critically ill patients (for example, those on ITU, HDU etc).
    • To participate in 7 day working, rotations within the community, extended weekday working hours, on-call duties and weekend working rotas depending upon the allocated rotation.
    • To assume responsibility suitable to experience in the absence of your direct Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist and liaise appropriately with other senior team members
    Professional

    To observe and adhere to departmental, Trust and professional standards, guidelines and policies.

    To supervise and appraise undergraduate physiotherapy students on clinical placement. This should include objective setting, appraisals, supervision, teaching, grading of work and assessment of competency and professionalism.

    To supervise junior staff on rotation via the departmental appraisal scheme. This might include teaching within designated tutorial programmes, assisting with clinical queries and caseload management.

    To participate in regular appraisals and objective setting with senior members of staff to ensure competency and professional development. To be able to recognise limitations and refer to senior staff for guidance. To maintain an active continuing professional development (CPD) portfolio.

    To partake in ongoing learning through attending and occasionally presenting at departmental in-service training and tutorials. To be responsible for own CPD to keep up to date with recent clinical trends through self study and attending external courses. To feedback to the Department as appropriate.

    To initiate and participate as required in departmental audit.

    Organisational

    To ensure that all equipment that may be provided for patient use or in the therapeutic setting meets appropriate levels of safety. To report any faulty, damaged or unsafe equipment promptly by following guidelines. Unsafe equipment must also be reported to the Lead Physiotherapist of that area.

    To adhere to the Trust procedure on incident reporting.

    To comment on proposed changes to departmental policies. To assist specialist and lead Physiotherapists in implementation of these policies and encourage other staff to do likewise.

    To assist with development of departmental protocols

    To assist in the recruitment of physiotherapy staff

    To develop projects and audits in response to service needs or as highlighted by personal development plans. To assess outcomes alongside senior staff and implement any changes deemed necessary.

    To develop and promote the role of physiotherapist within the work place and in the wider public domain
