About Emma Bailey:

Hi, I'm Emma and I'm a 31 year old nail tech/ beautician from Stoke on Trent. I currently run my own business on a self employed basis, and have been doing this since March 2020. The pandemic has had me facing many challenges, but I've enjoyed the hard work and what I've achieved.

I originally planned this to be my only income, but after careful consideration I've decided I'd like to do it part time, so I am looking for another part time role, preferably where I can work from home.

I have six years experience working in an office environment, two years running a business and working as a nail tech/ beautician as well as experience in teaching roles (university placements)

I would be interested to take on part time roles in beauty, beauty tutoring, marketing, social media marketing, administration or payroll. I feel I have developed skills throughout my varied working life which could be applied to any of these jobs. If a perfect job were to come along I would also consider full time employment.

When I'm not working I like to spend my time walking/ hiking and it's my goal to climb Snowdon. I got into walking after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and struggling to walk half a mile without being in pain. I feel so proud of the progress I've made and it's given me a much more positive outlook on life!

I also like to draw when I get the chance and have even done a couple of commissions for friends and family!

Experience

I am currently running my own nail and beauty business on a self employed basis. I started up at the start of the pandemic, as this was when my training finished. This in itself has made the job very challenging.

I have used old skills from previous jobs, my beauty training and picked up new skills along the way, and feel I have really developed my work and personal skills through doing this.

I have become self motivated and take great care in the work I produce. Working with clients daily has improved my people skills- I'm now much more confident in talking to a wide range of people, which in turn has had a positive impact on my mental health, and I find I am much more outgoing.

During one of the lockdowns I took an online Marketing course (designed for nail techs) which I really enjoyed and learnt valuable lessons on how to connect to potential clients, and how to target an advert to a niche by using their pain points/ desires etc. I also fell back on my graphic design and media studies from college and high school to help me design eye catching content. Due to resources, time and money my content is sometimes a little simpler than I'd like, as often I just have to throw something up at the end of a busy day, but this has opened up a new area of interest for me and I often wonder what I could achieve if I had the time and resources to create my marketing material.

Since running my own business I also created my website using wix, again wishing I had more time to use the blog feature! I created my own brand, which has gone through a few changes as I've gained new skills, but designed my physical and online marketing materials myself.

Running my own business involves controlling my stock, doing my tax returns, dealing with client enquiries, organising a work schedule and advertising, as well as doing my day job as a beautician.

It's important to deliver quality service and to be able to communicate with my clients in a friendly and helpful manner.

My previous role covered a wide range of areas in an office setting, from general office duties, stock contracts to assisting accounts payable. I did this for six years and used many of these skills to run my own business.

Education

I feel I have two completed two areas of relevant education.

The first was in Primary Education, where I received a Higher National Diploma from Manchester Metropolitan University. I enjoyed planning the lessons and teaching, but found I wasn't suited to working with children. However after completing my Nail Technology course, I considered going back to education and teaching beauty to adults, after gaining experience working in the industry.

I studied Nail Technology at Level 3 and also topped up my beauty qualifications with Lash and Brow courses. My education covered both theory and practical and has enabled me to run a part time business.

I'm now looking to teach beauty, which I feel I have a wide experience in and would be willing to take out further training if necessary.

The other option I'm interested in draws on skills I've learnt on the job and through an online Marketing course, designed for nail techs. This is an area of my job I enjoy, although I often don't have the time to put my full effort into it. However when I have put the effort into an advertising campaign, that's when I see my best results.
