About Sunny Evans:
In July 2023 I went to Sri Lanka for three weeks to do some voluntary work in a school for deaf children. I feel this experience expanded my knowledge on different children's backgrounds and how different their life is by being a deaf child in Sri Lanka. This trip taught me about many different cultures and I learnt so many new skills on this trip.
Growing up both of my parents were foster careers; I have experienced living with children aged from 18 months - 18 years that have diverse backgrounds and additional needs like Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. This has allowed me to understand different people's needs and having this responsibility has allowed me to control my emotional attachment. Both my parents are deaf, and I feel this has helped me gain knowledge in showing me how different people communicate. I have sign language skills as this is a way I communicate with my parents.
Experience
Speech and language therapy assistant My role for this job was to support deaf students in year 7s with their speech and language. I would observe them in their lessons and made any notes from my observations, I would work with the class teacher and discuss the areas the children need to improve on and would report back to the Speech and language department to share my observations and findings. I would support the Speech and Language Therapist with planning different activities and help prepare different materials and resources for therapy sessions to help assist and encourage the children's speech and language.
Waitress I have been recognised by my managers for my hosting skills and my effective team working skills with other staff members. As a host it is my responsibility for making sure the dining room runs smoothly. I can keep my composure when confronted with rude customers and I can resolve conflicts with customers. I have good listening skills which allows me to understand what the customers want.
Teaching assistant My duties and responsibilities at the Grange school (A special needs school for Autistic students for children who are age 8 - 16) I support students in the class, who have autism and speech and language difficulties, I support the students on a one to one base to help the students work towards their targets and goals.I also support the class teacher with getting things ready for the day and support the teacher with planning lessons
